DAVID BAZAN

Pedro the Lion’s highly-anticipated reunion LP Phoenix is out next week, and frontman David Bazan is celebrating its release with an intimate solo “living room tour” across the midwestern US later this month. Stops include Milwaukee (1/21), Madison (1/22), Davenport (1/23), and Rockford (1/24). Tickets to these shows are on sale now, and check here for all upcoming Pedro the Lion dates.

POSSESSED

Possessed basically invented death metal with their 1985 album Seven Churches, but then broke up in 1987 after releasing just one more (less well received) record and an EP. Tragedy struck when vocalist/bassist Jeff Becerra was shot in a robbery in 1989, leaving him partially paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. He didn’t let that stop him though, reforming the band from 1990-1993, and then again in 2007 with new members. They’ve been active since, but never released new material. That is supposed to change in 2019 when Possessed release their first new LP since 1986. Maybe they’ll preview some of that new material at their three upcoming shows in California this week, and hopefully more dates are announced with album details soon.

ICEAGE AND SHAME (TOGETHER/SEPARATE)

Post-punk powerhouses Iceage and Shame both released solid albums and toured a ton in 2018, and they’ll be back in North America this spring — including dates together in Phoenix, Tuscon and Oakland. In addition to these dates, Iceage will tour on their own, hitting Canada and the Midwest with Egyptian artist Nadah El Shazly, and Shame will play their own headlining shows, hitting Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Philly, among others. DRUG CHURCH (OPENING FOR MOVEMENTS)

Drug Church, whose most recent LP Cheer landed at #9 on our Best Punk & Emo Albums of 2018 list, are hitting the road this spring, opening for poppy emo band Movements. The bands will play together as part of Movements’ huge North American tour, with UK punks Boston Manor and Trash Boat rounding out the bill. The tour hits cities like NYC (Irving Plaza on 5/7), Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Philly, Washington D.C., Chicago, and many more. Tickets go on sale Friday (1/11) at 10 AM. ANGELIQUE KIDJO

Following the release of her genius reworking of Talking Heads’ Remain in Light last year, Beninese musician Angelique Kidjo will be hitting the road in 2019. Aside from playing a number of upcoming Remain in Light dates, she was recently added to the annual Tibet House benefit show at NYC’s Carnegie Hall on 2/7, alongside previously-announced acts Philip Glass (who curated the event), Laurie Anderson, Jason Isbell, Stephen Colbert, Jon Batiste, members of New Order, composer Joe Duddell, and many others. Apart from the NYC benefit, Angelique will be making stops in Princeton, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, San Antonio, and more. Find all dates here.

SMOKING POPES

Last year, alt-rock vets Smoking Popes released Into The Agony, their first LP with their original lineup in two decades, and they’ve recently announced a West Coast tour behind the record. Stops include Phoenix, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, Portland, Sacramento, and more. Tickets are on sale now, and you can view all dates here.

SONIC YOUTH “DAYDREAM NATION” FILM SCREENINGS

Sonic Youth have been celebrating the 30th anniversary of Daydream Nation with screenings of director Lance Bangs’ new concert film, which documents the band playing the record in its entirety in 2007. Further screenings have recently been added in Nashville, Memphis, Birmingham, Athens, and Tucson. Drummer Steve Shelley will be hosting all screenings, alongside appearances from Bangs, Robert Gordon, Howe Gelb, and Aaron Mullan on certain dates. All screenings with ticket links are listed here.

IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE

British afro-funks Ibibio Sound Machine will return this year with their newest LP Doko Mien, which drops March 22 via Merge. The group have also announced an international tour supporting the new album, including shows in NYC (Brooklyn Bowl on 3/20), Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, and Oakland, in addition to a bunch of UK dates. Tickets go on sale Friday (1/11) at noon, and you can find all upcoming dates here. You can also stream the album’s lead single “Tell Me (Doko Mien)” below.

THE DILS

California hardcore punks The Dils, who had a short but influential time together (Ty Segall covered “Class War” last year), lost founding member Tony Kinman in 2018, but his brother/bandmate Chip is reforming the group for their first show in 40 years. It happens at Los Angeles’ Grand Star Jazz Club on 1/27, as part of a series of concerts fundraising for the underfunded music education program at the local Castelar Elementary School.  Also on the bill are other local acts Alley Cats, Rhino 39, and Neko Neko. Tickets are on sale now.

ZYANOSE with HANK WOOD AND THE HAMMERHEADS and more

Japanese noise/hardcore punk outfit ZyanosE are known for their intense, rowdy live shows, and they’ll be bringing their energy to the US for some upcoming dates. They’ll be headlining Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus on 2/1 with fellow loud acts Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, Frenzy, Extended Hell, and Flower, which follows a date at Somerville, MA’s ONCE Ballroom on 1/31 with atmospheric metal band Morse. Tickets are on sale now, and these are the band’s only upcoming dates at the moment. For Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, this is a homecoming date on their tour (dates here).

LUCIFER

German metal band Lucifer released their second album last year, appropriately titled Lucifer II, and the band has revealed a slew of North American dates behind the record. They’ll be joined by Canadian rockers Spell on all dates, and they’ll be hitting cities including Brooklyn (Saint Vitus on 3/27), Cleveland, Philadelphia, Boston, Toronto, Atlanta, Montreal, and more. Syracuse vegan straightedge metalcore OGs Earth Crisis have announced a short Northeast run for May with support from rising vegan staightedge band Ecostrike.

NICK WATERHOUSE

Classic soul/R&B songwriter Nick Waterhouse announced his new self-titled LP, along with a North America/UK tour.

JEFF TWEEDY

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy expanded his 2019 tour behind last year’s WARM, including two new NYC shows (with BrooklynVegan presales).
