Tracyanne & Danny tell us what they're listening to in the van (on tour now)

Tracyanne & Danny, the duo of onetime Camera Obscura frontwoman Tracyanne Campbell and Crybaby’s Danny Coughlan, released their debut album via Merge back in May. It’s swoony, string-laden pop with a ’60s Jimmy Webb vibe and you can stream the whole thing below.

Their North American tour starts Thursday, June 14 in Atlanta and has them out with Lomelda for the whole trek. The NYC show is June 19 at Music Hall of Williamsburg (tickets). All dates are listed below.

We asked Tracyanne & Danny what they’ve been listening to on tour and elsewhere and they each told us about five records, including albums from Neko Case, Baxter Dury, Taken by Trees, John Prine, Roberta Flack, and more. Read what they have to say about them, listen to songs (including a playlist that also includes a couple of T&D songs, too) below.

Tracyanne’s picks…

Charles Watson – Now That I’m a River
I literally can’t stop listening to the new Charles Watson (Slow club) record, Now That I’m a River. Many moons ago our bands did a tour of Australia together and my residing memory is swimming in the Indian Ocean with Charles and Carey. This record makes me think of those happy days.

Zephaniah Ohora – This Highway
My husband introduced me to this. He’s mad about cowboy jazz. This is old school country – if you like Glen Campbell you will love it.

Taken by Trees – Yellow to Blue
Victoria let me hear this before it was finished. The song Charlie is a favourite. It’s a pretty big departure from the first TBT record Open Field but the melodies are strong and as ever the voice is top banana.

John Prine – The Tree of Forgiveness
He’s a master song writer. What’s not to like.

Neko Case – Hell – On
I love Neko Case and have been waiting patiently for my pre ordered record to pop through the door. I couldn’t wait and went on line to have a sneak listen. Bad Luck is the fav so far and almost sounds as poptastic as Belinda Carlisle (I love her too).

Danny’s picks…

Baxter Dury- Prince of Tears
Brilliant lyrics surreal and sardonic funny and sad all at the same time. Killer bass lines. Its a tough, beautifully plaintive and spare sounding record with lovely strings. Can’t stop listening to Mungo.

The Orielles – Silver Dollar Moment
Reminds you why you started a band. This record is pure joy. I especially love Sunflower Seeds.

King Krule – The Ooz
I love the rattle and clatter and invention of his music I first got to know about him when I drove past his video shoot on a street in South London a few years ago. I looked him up and have been listening ever since.

Francis Macdonald – Hamilton Mausoleum Suite
An album of modern classical music that I’ve had on repeat recently. Like a lost soundtrack. It’s a beautiful record.

Roberta Flack – First Take
I’ve had this album for years and I put it on the other day and it never ever ceases to amaze me.
