Ty Segall @ Webster Hall 9/17/2014
Ty Segall played his first of two shows at Webster Hall last night (9/17) and, as predicted, it was a bit bananas. (Also sold out.) Within the first second of the first song (the title track from new album, Manipulator), the photo pit barricades started to tip in and security had to hold them in place. After four songs or so, they stopped the show, and Ty told everyone to scoot back as they were going to push the barricades all the way up and get rid of them. After that it was a free for all, with constant stage diving, and Ty himself leaping into the crowd a few times.
Ty and the band (Mikal Cronin still on bass) ripped through 20 songs, including much of Manipulator, older favorites and a cover of opening band Wand’s “Fire on the Mountain.” Amongst those in the audience: Julian Casablancas, Mac DeMarco (who opened for Ty at Webster last year), Weyes Blood and Marky Ramone. Setlist, pictures and video of them doing “Manipulator” are in this post.
As for Wand (whose album came out on Ty’s God? records), they played a muscular set of psych rock themselves. At Death by Audio the previous night their set included a cover of Brian Eno’s “Here Come the Warm Jets.” The night started with Chicago’s Axis:Sova who will play Death by Audio tonight (9/18). Pictures from their sets are in this post as well.
