UK band Dry Cleaning prep debut EP (watch "Magic of Meghan" video)

The four members of UK band Dry Cleaning have been friends for years but only decided to form a band after a 2017 karaoke party. Lewis Maynard, Tom Dowse, and Nick Buxton worked up music first, drawing on a variety of post-punk influences, then brought in Florence Shaw who was a university lecturer and had never been in a band before. Florence went with what she knew and used her speaking voice on the tracks which complimented Dry Cleaning’s spiky, danceable sound. Dry Cleaning will release their debut EP, Sweet Princess, which they recorded before ever playing a show, on August 16 via It’s OK.

The first single is “Magic of Meaghan” which is about the current Duchess of Sussex. “The song is, in part, intended to serve as a thank you to Meghan for this service,” say the band, adding it “also aims to highlight how the news media dissect her decisions (‘Never has one outfit been designed, to send so many messages’) and the creative ways they conceal the misogyny and racism that is sometimes behind what they write about her (‘You’re just what England needs, you’re going to change us.’) The video, which premieres in this post, was directed by Lucy Vann and uses footage of everyday mundanity but finds beauty, choreography and irony in its frames. Watch that below.

Dry Cleaning will be on a UK tour in August including a stop at Green Man Festival. All dates are listed below.
