UK punks Shame on Dead Oceans, playing M for Montreal, 2 NYC shows & more

Thanks in part to them appearing on the Pitchfork Paris lineup at the end of 2016, South London punks Shame were one of the talked-about bands at SXSW 2017. They played the NME showcase (where I caught them) and announced a few months after SXSW that they signed to Dead Oceans (home of Mitski, Slowdive, Kevin Morby, and more). They’re clearly inspired by snarling late ’70s / early ‘80s UK punk, flaunting thick British accents and too-cool-for-school stares during that SXSW set. Ninteen-year-old singer Charlie Steen stripped down to his underwear at the show, ran into the crowd, and was climbing on whatever he could find to climb on. This not surprisingly has earned him some Iggy Pop comparisons (like by Bob Boilen on NPR), but it looked more like he was taking cues from Fat White Family (who Shame have played shows with). You need to be convincing if you’re gonna regurgitate the music of 40 years ago, and I left their set feeling unconvinced.

If you haven’t seen Shame yet, you’ll get a chance to check this buzzy band out for yourself when they return to North America in November. They’re playing M For Montreal, a Delaware show with Ought, two NYC shows, and more.

Those NYC shows include a gig on November 10 at Baby’s All Right with local garage rockers Honey (tickets), and another at Lower East Side punk club Home Sweet Home on November 15 (tickets TBA).

All dates are listed, with some Shame videos, below.
