UK trio Haelos on Matador, touring, playing SXSW, two NYC shows & more (listen)

Haelos

London trio Haelos signed to Matador a little while back, and this past June they released the four-song Earth Not Above EP on the label. It had them channeling late ’90s trip-hop and doing a good amount of justice to that sound, but the two more recently-released singles from their TBA debut full-length have them expanding into other territories. Titled “Pray” and “Dust,” they’re both good, but the latter is the strongest one to my ears. It’s not quite “alt-R&B” but it’s got the soulful-ness and ambient textures that that genre is known for and will probably appeal to its fans. Mostly it’s just a lush, stripped-down pop song that doesn’t sound like it’s going for one particular style. Listen to the new singles, a couple tracks from the EP, and the band’s cover of UK band The Beloved’s 1990 single “The Sun Rising,” below.

The band is set to come to the US in 2016 for SXSW and shows in California and NYC. The NYC shows happen March 29 at Mercury Lounge and March 30 at Baby’s All Right. Tickets for Baby’s are on sale now and tickets for Merc should be on sale soon.
