Union Pool Summer Thunder 2019 lineup: Sun Ra Arkestra, Magik Markers, L'rain, more

One of our favorite free outdoor series in NYC, Union Pool’s Summer Thunder, will soon be back for another season of shows in the venue’s outdoor courtyard. There is a major change this year, with shows moving from Saturdays to Sundays, but otherwise they work the same way, with the shows starting at 2 PM and going through 6 PM. Summer Thunder will also feature, as usual, return performances from  Sun Ra Arkestra (POSTPONED TO SEPTEMBER 1) which is a celebration of bandleader Marshall Allen‘s 95th birthday, and Latin soul great Joe Bataan who plays July 7.

The season starts with Magik Markers on June 2 with Weak Signal and Telepathic Band, and the rest of summer looks like this: L’rain and Slauson Malone on June 9; Circuit Des Yeux solo on June 23; Wreckless Eric & special guests on June 30; a duo performance by Bill Orcutt and Chris Corsano on July 14; Love & Rockers, the reggae band led by TV on the Radio’s Jaleel Bunton, on July 21; Ela Minus on July 28; Condo Fucks (aka Yo La Tengo in cover band form) and 75 Dollar Bill on August 4; B Boys on August 11; Sam Evian and Hannah Cohen on August 18; and a special Summer Thunder edition of JD Samson’s PAT Party on August 25.
