UNKLE release new single (listen); James Lavelle curated ‘Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick’ exhibit in London

UNKLE, the mercurial project helmed by Mo’Wax label head James Lavelle, just released new single “Cowboys or Indians.” It’s the first new music from UNKLE in five years (apart from a contribution to the God of Light video game in 2014) and features Elliott Power, YSÉE, and Mïnk. At seven minutes, “Cowboys or Indians” begins with a soulful chorus of voices over acoustic guitar, before getting into more traditional trip-hop/jungle UNKLE territory. Lavelle told Clash magazine:

The track looks back to the way I grew up with records as a teenager. When I grew up I was exposed to sound systems, hip-hop, post punk, and acid house. I’ve tried to combine these influences in a modern way, working with young artists such as Elliott Power, YSÉE and Mïnk. Their inspirations have made this record more contemporary. Elliott Power is very English; he’s not a rapper that’s trying to be American. He brings that British multi-cultural feel to the music.

No word on whether a new UNKLE album is on the way or not, but you can stream “Cowboys or Indians” below.

In other news, Lavelle has curated an art exhibition that is currently showing at London’s Somerset House, titled ‘Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick‘ which runs through August 24 and features “a host of contemporary artists, film makers and musicians showcasing works inspired by Stanley Kubrick.” Contributors include Jarvis Cocker, Mick Jones (The Clash/B.A.D.), Max Richter, Michael Nyman, Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter, Beth Orton, Samantha Morton & Douglas Hart, and lots more. You can watch a couple promotional videos about the exhibit below.
