“Now we know Contra has bloggers and music lovers torn down the seams, with some loving the album and the rest hating every minute of it, but last night the band had nothing but fans in the seats and played to them by mixing up tunes from their self-titled debut and their new record alike. Older favorites like “A-Punk”, “Oxford Comma”, and “Ottoman” were all sung along with and new tunes like “Horchata” and “Run” also seemed to get people crooning along with Ezra Koenig and company.
Watching the band you could see the exhaustion of the early promotional efforts was starting to get to them, but the soldiered on with energy and gusto hitting every note and making sure folks were dancing along to each song. Between tunes Ezra or Rostam would chat with the crowd, telling us this may have been the longest show they had ever played. It truly seemed that way as they seemed to work in just about every song we’ve ever heard from the band, missing a few but we’re assuming we just happened to miss those.
The show was pretty amazing, and while seeing them at the far more intimate Webster Hall or Bowery Ballroom would have been a trip, they seem to have grown to the point where the United Palace Theater is now the perfect setting for the band. The spacious, historic space seemed like home for Vampire Weekend on Sunday night and considering they spent years storming the area not too far south from there it makes all the sense in the world that this would be their homecoming show and that they would receive such an outpouring of love all night long.” [PTST]
