Vampire Weekend played MSG with Steve Lacy, announce 2020 tour (pics, videos, setlist, dates)
Just a few days after Vampire Weekend released their great new album Father of the Bride back in May, they celebrated it with an intimate, all-day release show at Webster Hall in the city that birthed them. And this past Friday (9/6), after touring all over, Vampire Weekend returned to NYC for a much larger show at the iconic Madison Square Garden. They played a 32-song, almost-three-hour set that saw them bringing FOTB contributor Steve Lacy (of The Internet) on stage for their first joint live renditions of “Dark Red” and “Sunflower.” Opener Angélique Kidjo also joined for pre-encore set-closer “Jerusalem, New York, Berlin,” which worked in bits of Paul Simon’s “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.” They’ve done a lot of location-specific covers on this tour, and the MSG show actually didn’t get any full covers, but VW did also work in a bit of Toots and the Maytals’ “Pressure Drop” into their own “Diplomat’s Son” (as they’ve done before on this tour) and they played the SBTRKT song that Ezra Koenig sings on, “New Drop.
