Vasudeva

Vasudeva releasing a new LP, touring, playing NYC with Tancred (song stream)

NJ instrumental trio Vasudeva play a kind of math rock that sounds rooted in bands like Minus the Bear and Maps & Atlases. It’s poppy and a little danceable, and the complexities are impressive but they don’t dominate the songs. They’re releasing their new album No Clearance on March 24 via Skeletal Lighting (pre-order), and we’re premiering a new song from it, “Turnstile.” Here’s what guitarist Corey Mastrangelo tells us about it:

“Turnstile” and the record as a whole are probably indirectly influenced by two of us moving out and closer to/to New York City. Also influenced by somewhat extensive touring and meeting new people and being exposed to new music, live and otherwise. This time around we really wanted to work on improving our songwriting and recording skills together and that process was heavily influenced by bands like Death Cab For Cutie but also listening to a lot of dance music. The themes of our music most likely develop themselves when we have a whole set of songs written but keeping it all open ended is ok by us too. I think we want everyone to have their own spin on it most of the time.

Vasudeva are also touring, including a Brooklyn show on Thursday (2/16) at Alphaville, where they’ll be opening for Polyvinyl-signed indie rockers Tancred. That bill also includes Lilith and Yucky Duster. Tickets are on sale. All dates are listed below.
