Washed Up Emo preps book ft. interviews w/ American Football, Mineral, Promise Ring & more

Anthology of Emo

Our friends over at Washed Up Emo have been digging deep into emo’s past and present for a decade now, and founder Tom Mullen is celebrating the site’s 10th anniversary with a book, Anthology of Emo: Volume One. It features interviews with ten of the genre’s pioneers (who were also interviewed for the Washed Up Emo Podcast), including Dan Didier & Davey Von Bohlen (The Promise Ring), Norman Brannon (Texas is the Reason), Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever), Mike Kinsella (American Football, Owen, Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Owls), Chris Leo (The Van Pelt), all three members of Rainer Maria, Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids), Eric Richter (Christie Front Drive), Blair Shehan (Knapsack, The Jealous Sound, Racquet Club), and Chris Simpson (Mineral). The book also features rare and unseen photos (check out a few below), and a foreword written by yours truly. The book is being distributed by Polyvinyl Records. You can pre-order it HERE.

Here’s some more info:

“My dream for all of this? That the history of emo isn’t just mentioning eyeliner, white belts and black hair dye. That’s definitely part of the history, but not the whole history,” Mullen continues. “The genre deserves a serious take without the Internet jabs and condescending reviews. Emo’s history was snagged by one era – that I love some of the bands from – still to this day, it’s held on with that notion of being a joke, phase and, heaven forbid, nostalgic. Reading these interviews, regardless of your favorite era, should hopefully give you a wider sense and appreciation for the word and the genre as a whole.” With the upcoming release of Anthology of Emo: Volume One, Mullen is continuing in his quest to spotlight artists from this expansive genre and enlighten & draw new fans to a scene that has brought him so much passion and joy over the years.

Anthology of Emo: Volume One will ship in December with events and signings planned around the release in Winter 2017 as well as SXSW 2018.
