watch Ben Gibbard, Julien Baker, Craig Finn, Kevin Devine, Aaron Dessner at Frightened Rabbit tribute

Last night (12/5) at Rough Trade NYC, Julien Baker, Aaron Dessner, Kevin Devine, Craig Finn and Ben Gibbard came together to perform the songs of Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison, who sadly took his own life earlier this year. The night ended with the whole group performing “Death Dream,” “Old Old Fashioned,” and “Swim Until You Can’t See Land” together, and before that, the musicians played in various solo, duo, and trio formats. Jenny Eliscu was the evening’s MC.

Kevin Devine started the night, doing “Break” and “400 Bones” solo, and “I Wish I Was Sober” with Julien Baker. Craig Finn then played “Heads Roll Off” and “Twist” solo, then “Acts of Man” with piano accompaniment from Christian Gibbs. Julien played “Holy” solo, then “The Woodpile” and “Nitrous Gas” with Aaron Dessner. Ben Gibbard did “Keep Yourself Warm” with Julien and Aaron, and “My Backwards Walk” with Aaron, before bringing everyone out for the aforementioned “Death Dream.” All of the performances were very moving, and you can watch video of them (except “Break” which we haven’t seen video of yet) below. Setlist below as well.

In related news, surviving members of Frightened Rabbit are playing their first show together since Scott’s death in Scotland this weekend with James from The Twilight Sad and other guest vocalists.

Last night I joined these incredible folks @roughtradenyc to honor and remember our friend Scott Hutchison by singing his amazing songs. As predicted, it was sad, but it was also cathartic and restorative. Each of the musicians was fantastic and performed the songs with reverence and respect. But truly, the most stunning part of the show was after all the musicians were done, the PA played “The Modern Leper”, and the crowd sang along at the top of their lungs. LOUD. It was like nothing I’ve ever felt before -a joyous reminder that the room had assembled to sing together, and that Scott's songs would be taken into the night, out into the world, carried with all of us, to be sung forever more. I kept it together until that part. Then I was a mess. So honored to be a part of it. Thank you Scott. Thank you @frabbits. Photo: @weallwantsomeone #StayPositive
