watch Billy Corgan talk about ripping off My Bloody Valentine

It’s no secret that Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan was very influenced by My Bloody Valentine, and one of the many times he’s spoken about it was in the above video, where he admits “Daydream” from the band’s 1991 debut Gish was an MBV ripoff. “I remember one of the first times I met Kevin Shields, he said ‘I like that song ‘Daydream,’ [and I said] ‘yeah I wonder why because I ripped it off of you.'” Watch more above.

Both bands play NYC tonight (8/1). MBV will be at Hammerstein with support from their old pal J Mascis, who will be playing with his psych band Heavy Blanket. It’s sold out, but resale tickets are still available.

The Pumpkins (who are back with 3/4 of their original lineup and focusing on music from the first five albums) are hitting MSG tonight with Metric (tickets), and tomorrow they’re playing a guest-filled NJ show featuring Courtney Love, Peter Hook, Chino Moreno, Davey Havok, two Killers members, and Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath.

UPDATE: Both shows happened (a block apart from each other). Needless to say, Midtown Manhattan had no shortage of people in band tees last night. Check out our review of MBV and our pics of the Pumpkins.
