Beach Boy Brian Wilson just released his first-ever solo career-spanning anthology, Playback, last week. It includes 18 songs that pull from nine of his solo albums, plus two previously unreleased songs: “Run James Run,” which Brian wrote and recorded for this release, and “Some Sweet Day,” an unreleased song from the early ’90s. It also includes “Heroes and Villains” and “Surf’s Up” from the 2004 Brian Wilson Presents Smile release, and two live songs from 2000’s Live At The Roxy Theatre. It has liner notes by writer/critic David Wild, and the cover art (above) includes a previously-unseen picture of Brian by legendary rock photographer Robert Matheu.
The album also includes “Love And Mercy” from Brian’s 1988 self-titled debut, which was also used as the name for the great 2015 biopic that starred both Paul Dano and John Cusack as Brian. We’re premiering the video for “Love And Mercy,” which features footage of Brian recording the song and has been in the Warner vaults for years. Brian tells us this about the song:
I remember I was drinking champagne this one night and I wrote love and mercy in half hour. I wrote this song because people need love and mercy in their lives and I feel like people love the song specially nowadays because it’s very relatable with what’s happening in the world.

Brian is currently on the final leg of his Pet Sounds tour, having just played NYC’s Radio City Music Hall last Saturday (9/23) at NJ’s Count Basie Theatre last night (9/26). He’s got one more stop in the area before this tour ends, Atlantic City’s Golden Nugget this Saturday (9/30). All remaining dates are listed below.
