After this crappy week with the Kavanaugh hearings and more, an evening of evening of protest songs made for a good capper. Friday night at Knockdown Center was “Flip These Houses,” an anti-Trump administration protest concert to help raise voter awareness and benefit organizations Power To The Polls (Women’s March), The Hometown Project, Rise And Resist, and The Center For Popular Democracy. Organized by onetime Brownies/HiFi owner Mike Stuto, the night kicked off with Lee Ranaldo, Craig Finn, Syd Straw and Lenny Kaye performing Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” and the night also included Spoon’s Britt Daniel doing Elvis Costello’s “Night Rally” and Stevie Wonder’s “You Haven’t Done Nothin’,”Nicole Atkins‘ covered Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan and Ted Leo doing The Clash’s “Clampdown,” Shilpa Ray (with Syd Straw, Lenny Kaye, Nicole Atkins & more) did Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power,” and Hamilton Leithauser covering Randy Newman’s “Sail Away” and The Pogues’ “Birmingham Six.”

Still more: Urge Overkill’s Eddie “King” Roeser did CCR’s “Fortunate Son,” Mick Collins (Gories/Dirtbombs) covered Heaven 17’s “We Don’t Need That Fascist Groove Thing,” Craig Finn covered Woody Gutherie’s “All You Fascists Are Bound to Lose,” Matthew Caws of Nada Surf covered The Jam’s “That’s Entertainment” and Ramones’ “Bonzo Goes to Bitburg,” Guster’s Ryan Miller did Pulp’s “Common People,” the Wrens’ Charles Bissell did Sinead O’Connor’s “Black Boys on Mopeds,” and Ted Leo rewrote Billy Bragg’s “Waiting for the Great Leap Forward” with lyrics about Brett Kavanaugh, Pitchfork and more. There’s was a lot more than that and you can watch the the first two sets of “Flip These Houses” (which was most of the show) below.
