watch Nick Delffs’ new video for “Song for Aja” + tour with Karl Blau starts soon
Portland indie rockers The Shaky Hands have been on hiatus since 2011, but frontman Nick Delffs has stayed busy, first as a solo artist under the name Death Songs and more recently under his own name. He last released the album Redesign on Mama Bird Recording Co. in 2017 — an indie folk/heartland rock record that can recall anything from Tom Petty to The War On Drugs to Phosphorescent — and we’re now premiering the video for “Song for Aja” off that album. The video was directed by Jon Sortland, who’s been drumming for The Shins since 2016, and it’s a very tender song that Nick wrote for his son. He explains:
“Song for Aja” is a very biographical song written for my son. As a parent, you get to see the world through the eyes of your child, and there is such a freedom and playfulness in that. Unfortunately, though, you’re forced to leave that world when you remember your responsibilities as an adult. Sortland really captured this dichotomy and seemed to have a deep understanding of it, being a father as well. Jon took that inspiration and centered the narrative around the Grim Reaper as a father sharing these same tender moments with his son. My biggest little critic Aja loves it, which is a bonus.

Nick is also touring, including Northeast shows with Karl Blau and other dates with Saintseneca. The dates with Karl Blau include NYC’s Mercury Lounge on 9/26 (tickets), plus shows in DC, Atlantic City, and Baltimore. All dates are listed below.
