People's Champs

watch People's Champs' new video ahead of tonight's free show w/ Musiq Soulchild

Brooklyn Afrobeat/soul collective People’s Champs returned today (7/7) with a new single “No Prisoners (Hostages),” a reimagined version of “Hostages” from the group’s 2015 debut album American Dreamers. The song has co-lead vocals from the soulful Melanie JB Charles and Starr Busby, who both sang on the new Gorillaz album, and the horn section shares members with Superpower Horns, whose work you’ve heard on Beyonce’s 4 and self-titled albums. (Starr Busby has also toured as a member of Esperanza Spalding’s band.) The new song comes with a new video, produced by Ari Joseph and Eduardo Lytton, which premieres below.

The collective have a hometown show TONIGHT at Prospect Park, opening for R&B/neo-soul great Musiq Soulchild. It’s one of the many free BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival shows, and doors are at 6:30 PM. Musiq Soulchild recently released the new single “Start Over” and you can hear that below too.
