watch Say Anything debut a new song at SXSW ++ pics

Say Anything recently signed to Dine Alone Records for their next album, which they made with the great modern-day punk producer Will Yip, and to celebrate the signing, they headlined the Dine Alone/Buzz Records/BrooklynVegan SXSW showcase at Swan Dive in Austin on Wednesday night (3/14). Though they’ve got a new album coming, they mostly stuck to a career-spanning set, kicking off with …Is A Real Boy‘s opening one-two punch of “Belt” and “Woe” and ending with their biggest hit “Alive With the Glory of Love” which got a mosh pit going and saw multiple people crowd surf including guitarist Kenny Bridges. But they did debut one song from the new album at their show.

Max Bemis said on stage that the new songs sound “kind of like the demos [he] made between Baseball and …Is A Real Boy,” which is a pretty exciting thought (those great demos have since been collected on the essential All My Friends Are Enemies: Early Rarities compilation), and I definitely heard hints of that era in the song they debuted. It was a quieter, drum-less song, the kind that Max has always excelled at, and I’m very curious to hear how it turns out recorded. Watch a video of them performing it below. Pictures of Say Anything’s set are in the gallery above.

The showcase also included Trail of Dead (who Max praised on stage several times and pointed out that he has a tattoo of), Greys, Special Explosion, and much more. Pictures of the whole showcase coming very soon.
