About a year ago Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess tweeted out the following question:

What Tim didn’t tell anyone immediately was that his supergroup had actually made a record together nearly 10 years before, over the holidays in 2008, but never got it quite finished (or released). Reminded of its existence by Deb Googe, who wondered what happened to it, Tim put finishing touches on it and the record, titled As I Was Now, finally saw the light of day this past May. It’s full of charming pop, firmly outside The Charlatans’ orbit while still displaying Burgess’ ear for hooks and melody. You can stream the whole thing below.

One of As I Was Now‘s standout cuts is “Nik V,” an angular minimal wave number that is unlike anything else on the record. (Shades of Wall of Voodoo’s “Back in Flesh,” though.) That song now has a video, directed by Chris Walker and Darren Groucutt, which premieres in this post. “‘Nik V’ is a song from ten years ago but it never had a name,” Tim tells us. “Then I met Nik V and I knew that the song was about her. The video was filmed in East London where we used to spend a lot of time.” Watch the “Nik V” video below.

The Charlatans just wrapped up a North American tour and will have a few UK shows with fellow Manchester vets James in December. All dates are listed below.

In other news, The Charlatans’ 2001 album Wonderland and their 2004 album Up at the Lake are being reissued on vinyl on October 26 and preorders are available.
