Ween played two nights in Chicago (setlists, pics from St. Patrick’s Day show)

The festivities got underway with an apt performance of “The Blarney Stone” which had not held the opener slot at any previous Ween shows. The set also included takes on classics such as “Push th’ Little Daisies,” “You Fucked Up” and a lengthy “Never Squeal.” Co-founders Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo and Aaron “Gene Ween” Freeman played acoustic guitars for a mid-set sequence of “Chocolate Town,” Tried and True” and the rarity “Kim Smoltz.”

An electric “Stroker Ace” came next and a few songs later Ween busted out “Mango Woman” for just its third live performance. “I’ll Be Your Jonny on the Spot” and “Polka Dot Tail” were among the selections rounding out the rest of the set. Deaner, Gener, bassist Dave Dreiwitz, keyboardist Glenn McClelland and drummer Claude Coleman Jr. emerged for the encore wearing Chicago Cubs baseball jerseys emblazoned with their names and the number 17 and offered up “Mister Richard Smoker, “Japanese Cowboy” and “Tender Situation” to round out the night. – [Jambase]

Merry, jam-friendly pranksters Ween hit Chicago for two nights at the Aragon Ballroom on 3/16 and 3/17. That those shows happened during prime Saint Patrick’s Day partying made things all the more festive (and had them open with “The Blarney Stone” on 3/17). We’ve got pictures from the second show, the one on actual St. Patrick’s Day, in the gallery above, and setlists from both nights are below.

Dean and Gene will be in NYC as part of their summer tour, playing two nights at Brooklyn Steel on June 6 & 7 (tickets). All tour dates are listed, along with video from Ween’s 3/16 show at Aragon, below.
