What’s going on Friday? (Courtney Barnett, Rhye, OM, Iron Chic, Deafheaven, Widowspeak, TWIABP, PUP & more)

Courtney Barnett @ BVCMJ 2013 (more by Chris La Putt)
Courtney Barnett

Rhye @ Outside Lands 2013 (more by Paige K. Parsons)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Courtney Barnett, Kins @ Mercury Lounge
One of CMJ’s breakouts last year, Australian charmer Courtney Barnett has now signed with Mom + Pop who will release her The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas in the US. Her two NYC shows — this is the first — are both sold out. Opening are fellow Aussies, Kins.

Widowspeak, Jessica Pratt, Porches @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
A rock-solid BKNB line-up tonight, with the dreamy sounds of Widowspeak, the bewitching folk of LA’s Jessica Pratt, and one of NYC’s best new bands, Porches.

Kanye West @ Mohegan Sun Arena
Kanye’s Yeezus tour has been quite the spectacle, and it should impress even the biggest of the “hip hop sucks live” naysayers. He brought it to NYC for four shows in November, but if you missed it then or just need to see it again, he’s in the surrounding area for a few dates this month, including tonight’s Mohegan Sun Arena show.

Justin Timberlake @ MSG
Justin Timberlake does a lot of things, some of them great, some of them less great, but one of those things is that he makes some of the most forward-thinking mainstream pop around, and he’ll fill MSG with that tonight. Rescheduled from this past Wednesday.

XXYYXX, Giraffage, Purple @ NYU E&L Auditorium
Orlando producer XXYYXX takes vocal samples of pop songs we’re all pretty familiar with, but chops them up in a way that splits the line between future garage and something you can actually dance to. There’s equally dancey support on this show too. Open to students and non-students.

Iron Chic, Chumped, Timeshares @ The Acheron
Iron Chic made a hell of a racket on last year’s The Constant One, an album of shambolic Japandroids anthems meeting gravelly Hot Water Music punk rock. Get there early for poppy Brooklyn punks Chumped too.

Between the Buried and Me, Deafheaven, Intronaut, The Kindred @ The Paramount
If you don’t mind making the trip to Long Island and seeing a bunch of proggy metal bands, this is another chance to catch Deafheaven’s brilliant mix of shoegaze, post-rock and black metal in the NYC-area.

Into It. Over It., The World is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, A Great Big Pile of Leaves, LVL UP @ Bowery Ballroom
This is one of the more stacked emo tours in a while with the Owen-meets-Death Cab sounds of Into It. Over It., the multi-layered emo of TWIABP, and the mathy, danceable Minus the Bear-style rhythms of AGBPOL. Local fuzz rockers LVL UP open and they’re worth catching too.

Yvette, Christines, Future Punx, Young Oprah Winfrey DJ set @ Glasslands
Rescheduled from the heart of the Polar Vortex: A exciting bill for those with post-punk proclivities: Yvette mine goth/industrial; Christines (new band from Andy of Woven Bones) skew shoegaze; and Future Punx will scratch your manic new wave itch.

Slothrust, Big Ups, Boy Toy @ Shea Stadium
Big Ups put out their debut record of caustic, noisy post-hardcore earlier this year, and if you like the sounds of anyone from Black Flag to Fugazi to Slint, you’ll find something to dig here.

OM, Zomes @ MHOW
Last seen amongst the ruins of the Temple of Dendur, trippy groove gurus OM return in a more modern enviorment.

Dave Hill, Valley Lodge, Walter Schreifels, Jim Tews, Brad Steuernagel, Joey Pfeifer @ Union Hall
It’s another edition of Dave Hill’s variety show “Meet Me in the Bathroom and Tell Me All Your Secrets” that mixes rock and comedy. Guests include Walter Schreifels (Youth Of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand).

Rhye, Ricky Eat Acid @ Webster Hall
Rhye don’t take their Sade-style smooth pop on the road that often, so any chance to catch them is one worth taking. This show is sold out.

The Attic Ends, Field Mouse, Chamber Band @ Knitting Factory
This is a benefit for Oxfam America…we’re partial to Field Mouse who have become quite a good live band over the last year.

PUP, Appomattox, Spirit Of Danger @ Cameo Gallery
While some bands try to push punk rock forward, PUP revel in its simplicity and anthemicism. So it might not be new stuff, but it’s super fun.

Suuns, Azar Swan, Bennio Qwerty, The Flag @ Death By Audio
Montreal band Suuns manage to sound sinister without resorting to eyeliner or black nail polish, and their live show is intense. Also on the bill: the more overtly goth Azar Swan and aggressive power trio Bennio Qwerty.

Caged Animals, Leverage Models, Candide, TOMBOY @ Baby’s All Right
A night of more apparent pop, with the big-hearted Caged Animals, the ’80s-ish New Pop sounds of Leverage Models, Candide’s dancey beats and new Brooklyn duo TOMBOY (and not the Boston punky band of the same name). Check out a new Caged Animals video below.

Nude Beach, Marvin Berry and The New Sound, Hector’s Pets, Liquor Store @ Union Pool
Get rowdy with four punky bands, headlined by the no-bs heartland sounds of Nude Beach.

Andrew Cedermark, Stephen Steinbrink, Jen Goma @ Cake Shop
A former member of Titus Andronicus, Andrew Cedermark makes laid-back rock that fits right in on Underwater Peoples (former home of Real Estate).

Rivers of Nihil, So Hideous, Black Crown Initiate, Torrential Downpour @ Saint Vitus
Pennsylvania death metallers Rivers of Nihil meet up with NYC atmospheric metallers So Hideous for a good double bill tonight at Saint VItus.

H.R. (Bad Brains), Dubb Agents, Rebelmatic, Radio Daze @ The Studio at Webster Hall
He fronts one of the most influential DC hardcore bands, but HR leans towards his rasta roots as a solo artist.
