What's going on Sunday? (Rush, Motor City Bar closing party, Alabama Shakes, Social Distortion, Femi Kuti & more)

Rush at Barclays Center in 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro)
Rush

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

Motor City Bar Closing Party (FREE)
While the Ludlow St. fixture will be open till the end of the month, this is the official week-early wake for the joint, with free music from The Swinging Neckbreakers, Tall Black Girls, Baby Shakes and The Othermen, as well as a slew of DJs including Jonathan Toubin. Party starts at 4 PM, bands are from 5 – 7 PM, and they’ll keep it going till 4 AM. It’s free.

Alabama Shakes, Johnny Fritz, Houndmouth @ Capitol Theatre
Blues rockers Alabama Shakes, who just played Firefly yesterday, are bringing their tour to the NYC-area tonight for a show at Port Chester’s Capitol Theatre. The bill is rounded out by a genre-appropriate lineup of Jonny Fritz (formerly Corndawg) and Houndmouth. You can still grab tickets if you haven’t already.

Rush @ Nikon at Jones Beach Theater
Prog rock legends Rush bring their tour to the newly-renovated Nikon at Jones Beach Theater (which looked pretty nice during Fleetwood Mac’s show last night). The weather’s looking good again so it should be a great night for some rock royalty and massive drum solos on the water.

Social Distortion, Dave Hause, Cheap Time @ Warsaw
Last night, long-running Orange County punks Social Distortion took their tour with Loved Ones frontman Dave Hause and garage rockers Cheap Time to NJ for a show that also included Hot Water Music. Tonight, HWM sadly won’t be on the bill, but that aside, Brooklyn’s Warsaw will be a much more intimate space to catch this band than Roseland Ballroom, and it should be a pretty wild show. To see Cheap Time at an even wilder show, catch them at Pianos tomorrow night.

Shakey Graves, Marmalakes,Wild Child @ Mercury Lounge
Austin singer/guitarist Shakey Graves, who played our BV Austin CMJ show in 2012, returns to the NYC tonight for an all-Austin bill that also includes Marmalakes and Wild Child. If you’ve yet to check him out, fans of The Tallest Man on Earth should dig his style. Familiarize yourself with this live session he filmed last year.

Femi Kuti & The Positive Force, Sinkane, King Britt DJ Set @ Central Park Summerstage (FREE)
This summer’s free Summerstage shows in Central Park continue today with a pretty diverse lineup. The show’s being headlined by afro-beat master, Femi Kuti, and also includes a set by Yeasayer/Of Montreal collaborator Sinkane and a DJ set from King Britt (who has releases on Hyperdub and other labels). Today’s show runs from 3PM-7PM and is totally free.

Free Time, Ducktails @ Shea Stadium
Tonight is the release party for Free Time‘s self-titled debut which came out a couple weeks ago on Underwater Peoples. Fronted by Australian ex-pat Dion Nania, it’s lovely post-VU strummy pop. They got a good get for their undercard: Matt Mondanile’s Ducktails who usually play bigger places than Shea. Regal Degal, who just moved back to Brooklyn after a sojourn in LA, open the night. $10 at the door.

The New York Electronic Art Festival @ Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts (FREE)
Part of the River to River Festival, the NYEAF “provides audiences with an opportunity to experience cutting-edge electronic artwork from artists working across the arts and technology spectrum.” Tonight is headlined by industrial pioneer JG Thirwell who will perform with chamber ensemble The Manorexia Project.

Mother Falcon @ Joe’s Pub
Enormous Austin collective Mother Falcon continue their NYC residency tonight which should, if nothing else, answer the question “can 18 people and their instruments actually fit on the Joe’s Pub stage?” Tonight’s guest is singer/songwriter Raul Midon. Advance tickets are still available.

Color War, Psychobuildings @ Ace Hotel (FREE)
Though the optimal place to listen to Color War would be in the Mojave desert with some cactus-based products to ingest, the swanky Ace Hotel is a lot closer for most of us, and the show is also free. Also playing is one-man psych-dance outfit Psychobuildings.

Obsolete Cinema w/ ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ & ‘KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park’ @ Freddy’s Bar (FREE)
Why not spend your Sunday afternoon in doors watching obscure cult classics at this much-loved South Slope bar. Today’s the kickoff event featuring two musical stinkers from 1978: the all-Beatles musical starring The Bee Gees and Peter Frampton (and George Burns and Steve Martin); and infamous made-for-TV movie starring everyone’s favorite costumed rocker in a very Scooby Doo type story. Sgt. Pepper’s is at 2:30 PM; KISS is at 4:30 PM.
