What’s going on Monday? (CSS, She & Him, Week of Wonders, Bass Drum of Death, Nothing, The LOX & more)

CSS at Webster Hall in 2011 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

The Lox, Funkmaster Flex @ B.B. King
It’s hard to believe that thirteen years have passed since Sheek Louch, Styles P, and Jadakiss released an LP as The Lox. And while each has been busy on the solo tip, many still miss the Yonkers crew that made their first appearance on “It’s All About The Benjamins” way back when. Relive those old tracks, and classic solo material too like “We Gonna Make It“, “Good Times” and “Mighty D-Block“.

Nothing, Lazyeyes, Turnip King, The Backhomes, Treatment @ Paper Box
Philadelphia’s Nothing practice heavy shoegaze, wowing a recent crowd at Saint Vitus. The band, which contains members of Night Sins, Horror Show, Salvation and recently Whirr, will headline Paper Box tonight before a tour with Whirr. Turnip King and Lazyeyes are also both worth checking out.

CSS, IO Echo @ Bowery Ballroom
Brazilian electro rockers CSS released their new Dave Sitek-produced LP, Planta, back in June, and this week they’re bringing their tour with another pop-minded band, IO Echo, to NYC for two shows. The first of those happens tonight at Bowery Ballroom.

She & Him, Camera Obscura @ Central Park Summerstage
She & Him (aka Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward) and Camera Obscura, who are both touring behind new albums this year, brought that tour to Central Park Summerstage over the weekend, and tonight they return to the venue for a second show.

Bass Drum of Death, Wild Yaks, Las Rosas, ILLS @ Shea Stadium
Garage rockers Bass Drum of Death just brought their tour through NYC for a free show with UMO last month, and tonight they do their first of two headlining gigs in not-free, much smaller venues. Tonight’s is at Shea with strong support coming from Wild Yaks, Las Rosas (ex-Harlem), and ILLS.

The English Beat @ City Winery
After playing a free show in City Winery’s backyard as part of the Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival, Dave Wakeling and his current iteration of The English Beat play tonight inside the venue. Sold out.

Sauna, Mannequin Pussy, Future Punx @ Death By Audio
Although it is an apt description for Death by Audio in July, Sauna is also an actual band (from Colorado, on Burger Records) playing the Williamsburg DIY venue tonight. Expect lots of jokes about that if you go tonight. Show up early to check out Future Punx (ex Fergus & Geronimo).

Week of Wonders, Chalk and Numbers, Pale Lights @ Mercury Lounge
If you’re not worn out from the long holiday weekend, here’s a nice indiepop show on the late side (doors at 9:30 PM) headlined by Week of Wonders (ex-Orca Team) who are making their NYC live debut at this show. Also playing: the charming, retro-pop sounds of Chalk & Numbers and Pretty Lights (featuring members of Comet Gain and Crystal Stilts).

Preservation Hall Jazz Band @ McKittrick Hotel
PHJB are on night 2 of their week-long residency at the venue in support of their new album, That’s It!.

There’s good weekly comedy on Monday like Broken Comedy w/ Hannibal Burres @ Bar Matchless and Night Train w/ Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield. For more laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
