What’s going on Thursday? (!!!, Mikal Cronin, Zomby, Big Ups, Sean Nicholas Savage, Alice Cooper, JSBX & more)
Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…
!!!, Classixx, Jacques Renault @ House of Vans
Though they began in California and their members are now scattered all over the world, with their signature song “Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard,” dancepunk vets !!! have always felt like a New York band. Welcome home, guys. With two other dancefloor-fillers on the bill, be prepared to sweat tonight. Free, but RSVP’d out.
Mikal Cronin @ MoMa
Mikal was here not too long ago, but is back for this show happening in a very cool setting: MoMA’s outdoor Sculpture Garden. The band’s on at 6:30 PM and it’s free with museum admission, though entrance into the actual show is based on capacity.
Sean Nicolas Savage, Jamaican Queens, Blanche Blache Blache, Regal Degal @ 285 Kent Avenue
Sean Nicholas Savage is something of a veteran to the Arbutus label/scene, and now that his labelmates are getting bigger (Grimes, Doldrums, Majical Cloudz), Sean is starting to get the credit he deserves too. He brings his tour to 285 Kent tonight, for a show whose entire lineup is pretty great, including the Prussia-related Jamaican Queens, pop weirdos Blanche Blanche Blanche, and Regal Degal.
Zomby, DJ Assault @ Output
Zomby’s production is always pretty masterful, and this year’s 33-track album, With Love, is an excellent example of that. Tonight he headlines Williamsburg’s hot new dance club Output. Should be a pretty fun show.
Big Ups, Low Fat Getting High, Vulture Shit, Flagland @ Shea Stadium
Fast-n-catchy Brooklyn punks Low Fat Getting High are celebrating the release of their new EP, Bad Yoga, at Shea Stadium tonight as part of an all-around great local punk bill. It also includes ’90s post-hardcore devotees Big Ups, the guitar-less Vulture Shit, and garage rockers Flagland.
Naughty By Nature @ Prudential Hall – NJ Performing Arts Center
I am nominating “Hip Hop Hooray” for an award for softest hip hop song with the hardest drums. Dance your ass off to classics like that, “OPP”, “Uptown Anthem” and more tonight.
Alice Cooper @ Beacon Theater
Before the pro-am golf tournaments, appearances on Wayne’s World and pontification on the origins of corpse paint, Alice Cooper was a ripping hard rock musician. Relive those early records and get your air guitar on at Beacon tonight.
The Beets, Grand Resort, Wild Yaks, Army Men @ Glasslands
After fading from view for a while, Jackson Heights finest, The Beets, seem to be back in action. Tonight’s a fun line-up all around, with wooly Wild Yacks and shimmering Grand Resort playing too.
Netherlands, GULL, Hard Nips, Bangladeafy @ Death By Audio
If you’re unaware, Netherlands is the current project from NYC scene mainstay Timo Ellis, who has logged time in Cibo Matto, Joan As Policewoman and Spacehog. Tonight’s show also features all-girl Japanese punks Hard Nips who are always fun live.
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, We Are Hex, Shockwave Riderz @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
While the JSBX always put on an, um, explosive live show, the whole bill tonight is worth checking out. Indianapolis’ We Are Hex dabble in gothy noise, and Shockwave Riderz take spins on motorik grooves. Foetus’ JG Thirlwell will be your DJ for the evening. Tickets are still available.
Love as Laughter, Sun Ladders, T.V. Mike and the Scarecrowes @ Union Pool
Long-running Olympia, WA indie rockers Love as Laughter, who have releases on Sub Pop, K Records, and other labels, haven’t put out an album in some time, but they still like to tour, and are in NYC tonight for a small Brooklyn show at Union Pool.
Lynyrd Skynyrd @ Seaside Concerts (FRRE)
There is no need to yell “Freebird” at this show. The southern rock legends are going to play it. Just wait.
The Specials @ The Paramount
These Two Tone vets inspired so much mediocre music, it’s sometimes easy to forget that The Specials’ debut album is just about perfect, and still sounds great today.
Savoir Adore, French Horn Rebellion @ Westway
Savoir Adore and French Horn Rebellion have collaborated, toured together and a couple of them are married to each other…so expect a fun, comfortable show tonight full of extremely catchy, danceable songs.
Fatoumata Diawara @ Metrotech Commons
A rising star in her Malian homeland, Fatoumata Diawara performs a free show today as part of BAM’s R&B Festival. She’s on at noon.
Zorn@60: The Holy Visions @ Lincoln Center
No Wave pioneer John Zorn celebrates his 60th birthday as part of the Lincoln Center Festival. This is the first of three nights, and tonight’s performance includes his mystery play The Holy Visions, based on the work of 12th-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen.
Monkey: Journey to the West @ Lincoln Center
Damon Albarn, Chen Shi-Zheng, and Jamie Hewlett’s musical take on one of China’s most famous tales is part opera, part Cirque du Soleil. Also part of the Lincoln Center Festival.
Week At The Creek with Christian Finnegan and Nick Turner
The Creek & the Cave hosts “Week At The Creek,” a standup series where one comedian performs at the Long Island City venue every night for a week. This week, hilarious standups Christian Finnegan and Nick Turner are stepping up to the plate. And it’s FREE.
Boat Club listening party @ Cameo (FREE)
Sweden’s Boat Club released their balaeric-influenced mini-LP, Caught the Breeze, in 2007 but it never got a vinyl pressing. Cascine Records has just remedied this and are having a listening party tonight in the front (restaurant) part of Cameo. Kisses (who play Mercury Lounge tomorrow) will DJ as well. 10 PM, free.
