What’s going on Sunday? (Ted Leo, Screaming Females, Julia Brown, Indians & more)
Ted Leo at MHOW in 2012 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…
Screaming Females, Nuclear Santa Claust @ Maxwell’s
Two of the better final Maxwell’s shows happen today. First it’s an early show from NJ DIY scene regulars Screaming Females with support from their punky Don Giovanni labelmates Nuclear Santa Claust (sold out) (Maybe pick up one of the Screaming Females Maxwell’s shirts while you’re there)…
Ted Leo, Shellshag @ Maxwell’s
…Then at night, another hometown hero, Ted Leo, will take over the venue for a late show with support from a third Don Giovanni band, Shellshag (sold out).
White Prism, Gold Lake @ Ace Hotel
If your taste in synthpop leans towards the Italo stylings of Sally Shapiro, you might want to check out Brooklyn’s White Prism, who will be playing Ace Hotel every Sunday night in July. Tonight’s opener: Gold Lake
Coma Cinema, Julia Brown, LVL UP, Alex G. @ Shea Stadium
Brooklyn DIY spot Shea Stadium is hosting a good bill tonight. Especially notable are Maryland’s Julia Brown (fronted by Sam Ray of Teen Suicide), who make lo-fi sugary indie pop, and local indie rock crew LVL UP.
Indians, Brazos, Leverage Models @ Knitting Factory
Copehagen indie popster Indians returns to NYC tonight for a Knitting Factory show with solid local support coming from Brazos and Leverage Models.
David Longstreth (DJ Set), The Drums (Jonny Pierce – DJ Set) @ W New York
This free (with RSVP) party in a hotel will feature DJ sets two big names in indie: Dirty Projectors frontman David Longstreth and The Drums frontman Jonny Pierce.
Oliver Mtukudzi & Black Spirits, Krar Collective, Fatoumata Diawara @ Rumsey Playfield (FREE)
Free day show in Central Park today with a headlining set from Zimbabwe’s Oliver Mtukudzi and The Black Spirits, who have been together since 1979.
Bob Dylan, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Ryan Bingham @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center
Bob Dylan and Wilco begin continue run of NYC-area shows (all of which are with My Morning Jacket, except Jones Beach with Beck) at Saratoga PAC tonight (we know Saratoga isn’t really NYC-area, but it’s Bob Dylan, so bear with us). Expect lots of multi-generational folk tradition, and maybe even some collaborations.
Seu Jorge @ Blue Note
Brazilian star Seu Jorge — best known in America for singing Portugese versions of Bowie songs in The Life Aquatic — is here for a week run of intimate shows as Blue Note.
Monkey: Journey to the West @ Lincoln Center
Damon Albarn, Chen Shi-Zheng, and Jamie Hewlett’s musical take on one of China’s most famous tales is part opera, part Cirque du Soleil.
There’s good comedy tonight too, like Christian Finnegan, Will Sylvince @ Eastville Comedy Club, Hannibal Buress @ Knitting Factory, and ASSSSCAT 3000 @ UCB. For more laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
