What’s going on Thursday? (Kid Dynamite, Huey Lewis and the News, Omar S, Grand Resort, Laura Jane Grace & more)
Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…
Huey Lewis And The News @ Seaside Summer Concerts (FREE)
While it was never really hip to be square, it does seem like a fun evening to catch Huey Lewis & The News performing their mega-platinum 1983 LP, Sports, in its entirety by the beach at Coney Island. For free. Got some extra time on your hands? Get there early and recreate the “If This is It?” video in the sand. 7:30 PM.
Nick Hook, Cakes Da Killa, H.O.M.E. Team, Flash Frequency @ 285 Kent Avenue
The most exciting part of this bill (to us at least) is NYC queer rapper Cakes Da Killa, who isn’t too far removed from Mykki Blanco or Le1f. He’s sure to have the place going pretty wild.
Xenia Rubinos, Rizzla @ Brooklyn Museum
Eclectic performer Xenia Rubinos released her debut album, Magic Trix, which is out now on Ba Da Bing. See her tonight as part of Brooklyn Museum’s “Audiophile” concert series that is free with museum admission.
Metalleg, The Shackeltons, Detroit Rebellion, Bird To Prey @ Cake Shop
While long-running PA band The Shackletons are the best-known name on this bill, you might want to check this show out for Providence, RI duo Detroit Rebellion make loose, groovy blues a la early Beck; or perhaps Metalleg’s glammy, punky powerpop. Streams of both are below.
Kid Dynamite, Joyce Manor, Red Hare, Swearin’ @ House of Vans
It’s the last US show for Kid Dynamite before they officially end their reunion, and that should make things as kids pile on each other to these songs for the last time. The support is great too, coming from raw pop punks Joyce Manor (who play their own Brooklyn show on Saturday), Dischord supergroup Red Hare, and emo-y lo-fi band Swearin’ (who also play another show on Saturday, and have even more coming up too).
Tristan Perich, Meehan/Perkins Duo @ MoMa
The MoMA Nights series continues tonight with a show on the contemporary composer side. Regular museum admission applies.
Omar S, Big Strickt, FIT, Turtle Bugg @ Output
Omar S returned this year with an excellent full length album of deep house, Thank You for Letting Me Be Myself. Presumably, you’ll be hearing some of those jams as he gets the entire place dancing all night. Stream the album’s title track below.
Habibi @ Fulton Stall Market, August 2012 (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Habibi, Total Slacker, Grand Resort, Young Boys, Retail, Dead Young Friends @ Pianos
This is Week 1 of Grand Resort’s Pianos residency, and they’ve put together a pretty good line-up of bands for the kickoff show. Close your eyes and you might think you were in Bushwick instead of on Ludlow St.
Har Mar Superstar, Sky White Tiger, Heloise & The Savior Faire @ The Bowery Electric
When he’s not going to pretend Replacements practice, Har Mar Superstar has been playing around NYC a lot recently. Catch him tonight on this party-oriented bill at Bowery Electric.
The Phantom Family Halo, Old Baby, Catherine Irwin @ Union Pool
Psychedelic indie rockers Phantom Family Halo and Young Widows-related band Old Baby team up for a Union Pool show tonight, making for a pretty good show at a pretty small venue.
Jose James @ Pier 40
The soul singer recently opened for Shuggie Otis in Central Park and soon will be back for a Bowery Ballroom show, but tonight, you can see him in another outdoors environment on Pier 40.
Laura Jane Grace (of Against Me!), Mina Caputo, Allison Weiss @ Knitting Factory
We’re still waiting on that new Against Me! album, but meanwhile singer Laura Jane Grace will be doing some celebrating on the road ahead of time playing its material acoustically. The night’s especially interesting because another punk singer who famously came out as transgender, Mina Caputo (formerly Keith Caputo of Life of Agony), will be opening the show. Laura and Mina do it again tomorrow night at Bowery Ballroom too.
KRS-One @ S.O.B.’s
This Bronx hip hop legend headlines a show at SOB’s tonight.
Talib Kweli (DJ set) @ Brooklyn Bowl
Questlove is taking a night off from his weekly Bowl Train DJ night at Brooklyn Bowl and letting Talib Kweli handle the boards tonight. The party starts at 11 AM.
