What’s going on Saturday? (Sleigh Bells, Burgerama, Potty Mouth, Local H, Daughter, Marky Ramone’s Blitzkreig & more)
Sleigh Bells @ T5, 2012 (more by Chris La Putt)
Andrew WK w/ Marky Ramone’s Blitzkreig @ Santos (more by Dan Bracaglia)
Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…
The New Yorker Festival
The annual compendium of erudite discussions and other fun stuff starts continues. Tonight’s options includes Kim Gordon’s talk with author Alex Halberstadt (and a performance by Body/Head), and “An Evening with Funny or Die.” While most events are sold out, a few tickets are always available before the show. Get there early and try your luck.
The Brooklyn Flea Record Fair @ Smorgasburg
Attention vinyl-lovers: get up close and personal with most of NYC’s indie labels and record stores and this always-fun biannual event. There’s exclusives, cool merch (DFA espresso cups?), and Minimal Wave cupcakes.
Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg, Andrew W.K. (special vocal guest), FIGO @ Irving Plaza
Well it’s not the Ramones (or even the Romones), but the band’s longtime drummer Marky is playing their classic tunes with party aficionado Andrew WK on vocals, so it’s gonna be a fun time nonetheless.
Sleigh Bells @ Le Poisson Rouge
It’s a record release show for Sleigh Bells’ third album, which is out on Tuesday. No suprise this relatively tiny show is sold out but you can still get tickets to see them at Terminal 5 in November.
Potty Mouth, Perfect Pussy, LORDO, Tweens @ 285 Kent Avenue
All four bands on this bill are pretty great. Potty Mouth make punk-inspired indie rock and tonight’s the album release party for their debut LP, Hell Bent. Syracuse noise punks Perfect Pussy will probably make for the most intense set of the night, while the bluesy LODRO and garagey Tweens will keep things on a more (but not too) lighthearted side.
Cyril Hahn, Ryan Hemsworth, Henry Krinkle, DKDS @ 88 Palace
Vancouver-via-Switzerland’s Cyril Hahn is signed to PMR (Disclosure, Jessie Ware) and like many of his labelmates, his music skirts the line between addictive pop and inventive house. Opening is cloud rap-turning-pop producer Ryan Hemsworth.
The Growlers, Cosmonauts, Gap Dream, together PANGEA, Habibi, White Fang, Colleen Green @ Bowery Ballroom
It’s the Burgerama Caravan of All-Stars featuring a whole bunch of bands on the cassette-loving Fullerton label. The show starts early with Colleen Green & White Fang on at 7:30 PM. If you’re going — the show’s sold out — you should get there early for them. We’re also looking forward to seeing Gap Dream whose new album, Shine Your Light, is quite good.
Versus, Slothrust @ Knitting Factory
Versus were originally to have played this show tonight but are no longer on the bill — The Skins now headline.
Lapalux, Natasha Kmeto, Alex Burkat @ Glasslands
Brainfeeder-signed producer UK Lapalux makes some pretty fine future garage, and finally got his debut LP out this year after a series of great EPs.
Teenanger @ NXNE 2012 (more by David Andrako)
Cy Barkley (& the way Outsiders), Teenanger, Pampers @ Death By Audio
Toronto’s Teenanger make nitro-fueled punk that falls somewhere between The Ramones and The Buzzcocks. You can stream their new album, Singles Don’t $ell, below. Tonight’s DBA show is opened by awesome locals Pampers who you should definitely check out too, not to mention Nashville garage punks Cy Barkley and the Way Outsiders.
Bill Orcutt, Jon Mueller @ Issue Project Room
IPR continues its 10-year Anniversary tonight with a solo acoustic set from blues guitarist Bill Orcutt and avant percussionist Jon Mueller.
Ex Cops, Heliotropes, Heavenly Beat @ Mercury Lounge
Three good local bands and it’s a free show. You need to RSVP via the Thrillcall mobile app to do so.
Surfer Blood, Andy Boay, Team Spirit @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Florida band Surfer Blood continue to crank out their Weezer-esque pop and are here playing MHOW tonight and Bowery Ballroom tomorrow.
Lake, Pianos Movers, Chris Norda @ Shea Stadium
Olympia, WA indiepop band Lake just released their sixth album, The World is Real, via K Records. (Stream it on Spotify.) If you’re tastes are on the sunshine pop end of the spectrum, definitely check them out.
Title TK, Logan Takahashi of Teengirl Fantasy, Hot Sugar @ Silent Barn
It’s a record release party for Title TK, and things should get bumpin’ when electronic musicians Logan Takahashi of Teengirl Fantasy and Hot Sugar take over.
Daughter, Bear’s Den @ Terminal 5
Having come off a tour with The National, ethereal, folky UK band Daughter are here playing their biggest NYC show yet.
Fountains of Wayne, Soul Asylum, Evan Dando @ Webster Hall
Fountains of Wayne headline this nostalgia-tinged tour that includes fellow ’90s alt-stars Soul Asylum and Evan Dando. Don’t be ashamed to sing along.
Steely Dan @ Beacon Theatre
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker continue their seven-night run at Beacon and tonight’s show is “Audience Request Night.” Here’s your chance to yell “Freebird.”
Rufus, Sly Stone @ B.B. King Blues Club
It’s a rare chance to catch funk/soul legend Sly Stone tonight when he opens for the also-renowned funk group Rufus.
Matana Roberts @ Jazz Gallery
Jazz saxist Matana Roberts defies the boundaries of her genre, bringing in elements of blues, spoken word, and more. Tonight she and her band play the Jazz Gallery.
The Smithereens @ Hackensack Street Fair
NJ college rock survivors play a free show today at 4 PM. “Blood and Roses” still sounds pretty good nearly 30 years later.
The Sun Ra Arkestra @ The Allen Room
Sun Ra may have passed on to a different plane, but his spirit lives on in the current edition of the Ra Arkestra, led by original member and saxophonist Marshall Allen. Added bonus: The Allen Room is easily one of the most spectacular rooms in NYC.
