Fiona Apple, Blake Mills @ Beacon Theatre
Fiona Apple and Blake Mills are doing two nights of “Anything We Want” at Beacon Theatre this week. What exactly does that mean? Back in July they said, “We know it’ll be something special, and we aren’t being coy here — it’s just that we have about 26% of an idea of what the fuck we will be playing for you” and that “the uncertainty excites us.” They’ve probably figured out more of the set by now.

Elliott Smith tribute w/ Cat Power, Zachary Cole Smith (DIIV), Sky Ferreira, Yoni Wolf (of Why?), The Low Anthem, Luke Temple, Marissa Nadler, Aaron Pfenning, Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz), Adam Schatz, The Perennials, Tereu Tereu @ Glasslands
This stacked lineup for a tribute to the late, great songwritier Elliot Smith includes Cat Power, Cole of DIIV, Sadie of Speedy Ortiz, Marissa Nadler, Sky Ferreira, and many more.

Foxygen, Ben Chatrer, Jungle Green @ Bowery Ballroom
Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado was just in NYC playing a bunch of CMJ shows, and now the whole band is here for a 2-night stand of their ’60s-style baroque/psych pop and Jim Morrison-style stage antics.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, A Great Big Pile Of Leaves, Great Caesar @ Webster Hall
A Great Big Pile of Leaves released one of the more fun, somewhat mathy, somewhat emo, rock albums of the summer with You’re Always On My Mind, out now on Topshelf. Their sound should go great with the sunny vibes of the equally long-named Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin.

Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds @ Mercury Lounge
Legendary guitarist/singer Kid Congo (The Gun Club, The Cramps, The Bad Seeds) and his garage rock band The Pink Monkeybirds are on the road, and after having played Secret Project Robot in Brooklyn last night, they hang around NYC for tonight’s show at Mercury Lounge.

Fletcher C. Johnson, JP5, Pity Party, The Goddamn Rattlesnake @ Death By Audio
It’s a night of different lo-fi styles at Death by Audio, with guitar pop songwriter Fletcher C. Johnson (who recently opened for Parquet Courts and Guards), ex-The Measure [sa] pop punks Pity Party, bluegrass collective Goddamn Rattlesnake, and rock n’ rollers JP5.

Man Man, Xenia Rubinos @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Weirdo rockers Man Man are back with their new On Oni Pond LP, and this week their tour in support of it hits NYC for two shows with arty local songwriter Xenia Rubinos.

The Stargazer Lilies, Dead Leaf Echo, The Veldt, Acres @ Paper Box
Melt away at this record release show for NYC dream pop band The Stargazer Lilies that also features fellow effects pedal lovers Dead Leaf Echo and The Veldt.

‘Two Boys’ (Nico Muhly) @ Metropolitan Opera
As described by the Met, Nico Muhly’s acclaimed new opera explores “identity and desire in the shadowy world of the Internet as a detective investigates the stabbing of one teenage boy by another — and discovers a tangled web of online intrigue.” Tickets are still available.

Night Train w/ Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield
Wyatt Cenac does his weekly Night Train comedy show at Littlefield with guests Found Footage Festival, Marcus Monroe, Carla Rhodes, Ted Travelstead, Jena Friedman, and more.
