What's going on Friday? (Sebadoh, Big Freedia, M.I.A., Colin Meloy, Deerhoof, Melt-Banana, Dave Longstreth & more)

Sebadoh at Bowery Ballroom in 2012 (more by Bryan Bruchman)
Sebadoh

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

Sebadoh, Octa#grape @ Bowery Ballroom
Lou Barlow is in two veteran indie rock bands, and the one he co-fronts, Sebadoh, just released Defend Yourself, their first album in 13 years. Expect a fair ammount of ’90s faves as well as new ones tonight.

M.I.A. @ Terminal 5
M.I.A.’s multi-genre music knows no boundaries, so there’s no telling what her new album, Matangi, will be. It comes out on November 5, but right before then she’ll do two nights at Terminal 5. This is the first.

Big Freedia @ Brooklyn Bowl
Bounce queen Big Freedia, who you may know as the world record holder for most people twerking simultaneously, the star of her new FUSE reality series, or the person behind some of the most fun live shows around, comes to NYC for a two-night stand at Brooklyn Bowl this week. She’s promising special guests too. This is night 1.

Deerhoof, Elizabeth & the Catapult, AWKWAFINA, Dynasty Electric, Butter The Children, Alyson Greenfield, Haif Waif, KASHKA, Angela, Sheik, Aye Nako @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The Tinderbox Music Festival, “an annual event showcasing a powerful and diverse lineup of established and emerging female artists producing innovative original music,” returns today. Especially notable artists on the bill include the pop-punky Aye Nako, the shoegazey Butter the Children, and of course Deerhoof.

Melt-Banana, Brain Tentacles, Vaz @ Saint Vitus Bar
As Doug Moore put it, “You should really, really go see this band. I’m normally a stereotypically jaded stand-in-the-back-with-crossed-arms NYC audience member, but even for me, it’s basically impossible not to get down hard when these guys play.”

Colin Meloy (of The Decemberists), Eleanor Friedberger @ Town Hall
Normally Colin Meloy is singing for The Decemberists, but he’s doing the solo thing for this tour, which happens around the same time as his new Kinks covers EP. Opening is another solo artist, Eleanor Friedberger (of the Fiery Furnaces).

The Misfits, The Attack @ Starland Ballroom
Like we said when they played NYC on Wednesday, it’s not Halloween without a Misfits show. They did their actual Halloween show in Boston last night, and tonight they do Day of the Dead in NJ.

David Longstreth of Dirty Projectors, The Calder Quartet @ The Metropolitan Museum of Art
For this show, David Longstreth (the brains behind Dirty Projectors) will be premiering new work in addition to new arrangements of Dirty Projectors songs with the Calder Quartet.

Dying Fetus, Exhumed, Abiotic, Rivers of Nihil @ Gramercy Theatre
Dying Fetus and Exhumed aren’t the most inventive death metal bands, but they’re among the best live acts in the business. Worth it to watch John Gallagher and Matt Harvey (respectively) shred through their ridiculous rhythm guitar parts while breaking off guttural vox alone.

Leverage Models, Spirit Animal @ Mercury Lounge
If you like your pop music best in the widescreen format, with loads of ambition and maybe some sax and syn-drums for good measure, so do Leverage Models.

Steve Wynn and The Miracle Three, Ivan Julian & The Head @ The Bowery Electric
The onetime Dream Syndicate frontman shares a night with former Voidoid member Ivan Julian. While this show was announced ages ago, this seems prime to become a Lou Reed tribute.

Nas @ MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino
It’s a bit out of NYC, but a good opportunity to see Nas on a Friday night, and a good excuse to head to the casino (or vice versa).

Spank Rock, Dope Body @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Tonight’s the first night of the new Brooklyn Night Bazar’s permanent Greenpoint location where they’re be bringing hand-made things to buy, local food and cool music every Friday and Saturday all year round. Spank Rock will break the stage in.

Grooms, Far-Out Fangtooth, LODRO, Mone @ Death By Audio
Quality local noisemakers Grooms and LODRO team up with Philly’s Far-out Fangtooth for a night of guitars.

Aziz Ansari @ Kaufmann Concert Hall
This is not stand-up but a “conversation with” the comedian and Parks & Recreation star, though we’re sure it will be funny too. Sold out.
