What’s going on Sunday? (Goblin, Hugh Cornwell, Nick Lowe, Zevious, Palehound, Fred & Toody & more)
Goblin @ Housecore Horror Fest (more by Tim Griffin)
Fred Armisen & Hugh Cornwell (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…
Goblin, Zombi @ Le Poisson Rouge
Italian prog rockers Goblin, whose soundtrack from Dario Argento’s Suspiria is a undisputed classic, are back for one more NYC show. You may never have another chance if you’re on the fence.
P!NK, The Hives @ Barclays Center
Opening for P!NK in an arena may not be your ideal way to see The Hives, but we’d be remiss not to mention that these highly entertaining Swedish rockers are in Brooklyn tonight.
Joel Ford, Matt Mondanile (DJ Set) @ Bossa Nova Civic Club
Joel Ford is a man of many projects, having most recently teamed up with Leanne Macomber from Neon Indian for their Ejecta project, and also one half of Ford & Lopatin (with Daniel Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never), and a solo artist under the name Airbird. Tonight he’s under his own name, and Matt Mondanile (Real Estate, Ducktails) is DJing.
Bluffing, Flagland, Frankie Cosmos, Palehound @ Death By Audio
This is an all around solid local show with the indie pop of Bluffing, the garage punk of Flagland, the folky Porches-related Frankie Cosmos, and the singer/songwriter-y noise rock of Palehound.
Hugh Cornwell, Ian Rubbish @ Highline Ballroom
The former Stranglers frontman has a pretty good new album out this year in Totem & Taboo, which finds him in feisty punk mode again. Opening tonight is another old UK punk, Ian Rubbish (or maybe it’s Fred Armisen).
Deap Vally, JJUUJJUU, Anna Troy @ Mercury Lounge
LA hard rockin’ garage duo Deap Vally are back for another visit to the East Coast.
Nick Lowe @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
This was supposed to be an in-store at Rough Trade, but has been moved to MHOW due to RT’s sound issues. You still need to go to Rough Trade first and buy his new holiday album Quality Street to get a wristband for the show. 2 PM.
Gates, UnWed, Have Mercy, States and Kingdoms @ Saint Vitus Bar
There’s some vets on this bill tonight with the live debut of UnWed (members of Hot Water Music, Primitive Weapons, Small Brown Bike) and States & Kingdoms (members of Rival Schools, Thursday). Younger bands Gates and Have Mercy aren’t too far removed from the sound of those older ones.
Zevious, Hyrrokkin, Pants Exploder, Matt Shulz & Greg Saunier @ Union Pool
It’s a pretty stacked bill of heavy, noisy, out-there music at Union Pool tonight.
Vaz, PC Worship, Ornament (Joe from Growing) @ Baby’s All Right
Yet another good night of heavy/noisy music goes down at Baby’s All Right, headlined by Brooklyn noise rockers Vaz.
Matisyahu, Kosha Dillz @ Webster Hall
Hanukkah may be over for this year, but Matisyahu is still out celebrating on his annual Festival of Light tour which hits NYC tonight.
Reverend Billy & The Stop Shopping Choir @ Joe’s Pub
Longtime anti-capitalist crusader Reverend Billy continues his Sunday ministry/residency at Joe’s Pub which runs through December 22.
Fred & Toody (of Dead Moon) Unplugged, Steve Gunn, Honey @ Knitting Factory
Portland’s Dead Moon, a band highly influential on the “Seattle Sound” of the early ’90s, broke up back in ’06, but two of its members Fred and Toody Cole (also of The Rats and Pierced Arrows) are out on an acoustic tour which hits NYC for two shows this week, this being the first. Openers are good too: Steve Gunn (of Kurt Vile’s live band) and Honey (ex-Psychic Ills).
Hannibal Buress @ Knitting Factory
Big league comedy talent (Chris Rock, Louis CK, etc) show up regularly (and unannounced) for Hannibal’s very popular free comedy show at Knitting Factory’s front bar. Get there early.
