What’s going on Wednesday? (Los Campesinos!, Neutral Milk Hotel, Rural Alberta Advantage, Ed Askew & more)

Los Campesinos! in Austin in 2012 (Los Camps)
Los Campesinos
NMHNMH

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

Neutral Milk Hotel, Elf Power @ Capitol Theatre
After releasing one of the most classic indie albums of all time with In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel pretty much disappeared with frontman Jeff Mangum choosing to remain mostly out of the public eye. A few years ago, Mangum began touring again, but it wasn’t until late 2013 that Neutral Milk Hotel returned to the road. Their reunion tour finally comes to NYC and the surrounding area this month. Tonight they’re in Port Chester followed by five NYC shows later in the week.

Los Campesinos!, Speedy Ortiz @ Irving Plaza
Welsh band Los Campesinos! put out their fifth collection of quality indie pop with No Blues last year, and they’re currently over in North America supporting it. If you’re going, get there early for Speedy Ortiz who do traditional indie rock right.

Ed Askew, Victor Herrero, Josephine Foster @ Issue Project Room
Ed Askew is a certifiable folk legend whose excellent (and often underappreciated) material dates back to the late ’60s, and tonight he’s with Josephine Foster (and her husband/collaborator Victor Herrero) who is a much newer artist but owes a lot to Ed’s prime era.

The Rural Alberta Advantage, New Lands @ Glasslands
Canada’s folky indie rockers The Rural Alberta Advantage are back in NYC for three shows this week, tonight’s and two at Mercury Lounge tomorrow. This one’s sold out but you can still grab tickets to tomorrow’s early show.

Doug Paisley @ Joe’s Pub
Canadian alt-country singer Doug Paisley just put out his solid new album, Strong Feelings, this week and tonight he comes to NYC to celebrate at Joe’s Pub.

Ty Dolla $ign, Black Cobain, Tijon, Gliffics @ SOB’s
LA rapper Ty Dolla $ign recently got some love for his Beach House 2 mixtape which featured Kevin Gates, DJ Mustard, IAMSU and others, and if you’re into those guys Ty could be up your alley too.

Lo-Fang, Carroll @ Mercury Lounge
The 4AD-signed Lo-Fang makes art pop that mixes electronic and acoustic instruments, and though he’s about to play some pretty big stages opening for Lorde, tonight you can catch him on his own in a smaller room, Mercury Lounge.

Jay Z @ Prudential Center
Jay Z recently did two nights at Barclays Center, and tonight he’s just a bit outside of home for this Prudential Center show.

Wyatt Cenac @ Union Hall
Night Train host Wyatt Cenac is recording his new comedy album tonight in the confines of Union Hall’s tiny basement showroom. There’s an early and late show and both are sold out.

Endless Boogie, Call of The Wild, Degreaser @ Union Pool
Jammy Brooklyn rockers Endless Boogie continue their Union Pool residency tonight with power trio Call of the Wild and the heavy blast that is Degreaser.

Junior Prom, Lips, Krystalmath @ Pianos
Slick dancerockers Junior Prom headline this show but we’re partial to Australian ex-pat Lips who makes winsome synthpop.

The Strypes, The Can’t Tells @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Irish sensations The Strypes have been playing together for five years but are still in their teens — and sound like mod ’60s soul. Given that description you might not be surprised to learn Paul Weller, Roger Daltrey, Jeff Beck and Noel Gallagher are all fans.

Big Terrific @ Cameo
Max Silvestri hosts the free weekly comedy show in the back of Williamsburg’s Lovin’ Cup. No word on who’s playing tonight, but you can check Max’s Twitter.
