Floor, Kadavar, Ruby the Hatchet @ Saint Vitus
Torche has been churning out great sludge pop for almost a decade now, but before that frontman Steve Brooks was doing the same thing in Floor, who are excitingly back with a new record planned for this year. Ahead of that is tonight’s one-off in Brooklyn, where we’ll hopefully get a taste of the new material.
Eagulls, Yvette @ Mercury Lounge
Eagulls’ upcoming self-titled LP is chock-full of driving post-punk, and the band look the part live too, with singer George Mitchell bringing the attitude and facial expressions you’d expect from the way he spits his words on record.
Modern Rivals, Junior Prom, PS I Love You, Turnip King, The Dolls @ Pianos
Most excitingly, this show represents the return of Canadian indie rock duo PS I Love You to NYC. They’ve been quiet for a while but have a new album in the works, so hopefully we’ll get to hear some of it tonight. If you’re going, local band Turnip King are worth catching as well.
Pharmakon, Faten Kanaan, Jessie Stead, Angus Tarnawsky @ Trans-Pecos
Pharmakon is a great purveyor of industrial noise, but she also has songs that give her sound a truly more melodic side (and excellent lead vocals).
Endless Boogie, Mike Wexler Band @ Union Pool
The Boogie continue their residency at hometown venue Union Pool tonight, and opening this one is Mike Wexler who echoes the psychedelic folk of the late ’60s/early ’70s.
Habibi, The Mystery Lights, Hector’s Pets @ Baby’s All Right
Brooklyn’s Habibi finally released their debut album (via party-loving Burger Records) and tonight celebrate its release. In addition to the bands, Jonathan Toubin will spin in the front room.
Memorial Gore, Shy Boys, Sports Guy @ Cake Shop
Kansas City, MO’s Shy Boys are indiepop through and through, from their guitars jangly down to their name. But they’re not wimps. Their debut album is filled with confident, melodic songwriting and tonight is their first of two NYC shows.
Netherlands, Talibam!, Sugarlife, Space Meow @ Death By Audio
Timo Ellis fronts this excellent synth-fueled heavy punk band. Embrace your squelchy side at their show tonight.
Big Terrific @ Cameo
Max Silvestri hosts the free weekly comedy show in the back of Williamsburg’s Lovin’ Cup. No word on who’s playing tonight, but you can check Max’s Twitter.
John Legend @ McKittrick Hotel
What is classy R&B hunk John Legend doing playing the ridiculously intimate McKittrick Hotel? It must be a Super Bowl show. Sold out
