What's going on Thursday? (Dum Dum Girls, Sylvan Esso, Run DMC, Guerilla Toss, Jason Isbell, Prefuse 73 & more)
Dum Dum Girls @ LA’s The Echo this week (via @martinkendallwong)
Sylvan Esso
Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…
Dum Dum Girls, Sapphire Mansions, The New Lines @ Mercury Lounge
It’s a record release show for Dum Dum Girls’ terrific, somewhat Britpop-inflected new album, Too True. It’s sold out but if you’re going, get there early for locals The New Lines (shades of Broadcast) and Sapphire Mansions (C-’86 style jangle).
Sylvan Esso, ARP, The Districts @ Baby’s All Right
The folky/electronic collaboration between Mountain Man’s Amelia Meath and Megafaun’s Nick Sanborn, Sylvan Esso will preview songs tonight from their debut album, out in May. Note the venue change: This show was moved from Rough Trade last minute. It’s a late show, with Arp at 10 PM and Sylvan Esso at 11. Get there early for a 9pm set by The Districts, a young band from Pennsylvania who recently signed to Fat Possum.
Guerilla Toss, Ryan Power, Horse Lords, Sediment Club, Cloud Becomes Your Hand, No Magic, Brat Pit @ Silent Barn
There’s a lot of quality weird rock on this bill, including Massachusetts art punks Guerilla Toss, VT lo-fi pop musician Ryan Power, Baltimore experimentalists Horse Lords, no wave revivalists Sediment Club, avant-popsters Cloud Becomes Your Hand and more.
Jason Isbell @ The Allen Room
A former Drive-By Trucker, Jason Isbell released the critically acclaimed Southeastern last year and plays tonight at one of NYC’s most spectacular stages as part of the American Songbook series.
Kings of Leon @ Highline Stages
This is yet another of the many special concerts happening around the city to help hype Super Bowl Week in NYC. You had to win tickets to see this one.
Toubab Krewe, Joseph Arthur @ Merkin Concert Hall
Part of the NY Guitar Festival, this is also part of the “Silent Film/Live Guitars” series. North Carolina’s Toubab Krewe soundtracks Yasujirô Ozu’s 1932 comedy I Was Born, but… while Joseph Arthur will provide accompaniment to Fatty Arbuckle’s 1917 comedy Oh Doctor!
Jack of Heart, 999999999, Doozies @ Death By Audio
French garage rockers Jack of Heart bring their joie de rock and wild live show to DbA tonight, their first of two NYC shows this week.
Josephine Foster, Blood Warrior, The Kinematics, Ancient Ocean @ Trans-Pecos
Josephine Foster makes the kind of bare-bones folk inspired by the ahead-of-their-time cult heroes of the ’60s’70s who continue to become more and more influential on modern music. She does it justice too, and if that’s your kind of thing, this should be a great show.
Prefuse 73, Nosaj Thing, FaltyDL @ Output
This great triple bill should have you dancing all night with the glitch hop sounds of Prefuse 73 and Nosaj Thing, and the UK bass-inspired sounds of NYC’s FaltyDL.
Run DMC, Busta Rhymes, The Roots @ Bud Light Hotel Super Bowl Cruise
Tonight the Bud Light Hotel cruise ship hosts one of the many Super Bowl weekend shows in NYC, this one with three influential hip hop veterans.
Talib Kweli (DJ Set) @ Brooklyn Bowl
For tonight’s installment of the weekly Bowl Train DJ night at Brooklyn Bowl, Talib Kweli will be handling the boards rather than usual DJ Questlove (who will be busy with The Roots’ Super Bowl show).
Band of Horses @ McKittrick Hotel
Another Super Bowl show brings these folk rockers to the intimate McKittrik Hotel about a month ahead of their upcoming sold-out Town Hall show.
