What's going on Saturday? (Yuck, JSBX, Kanye, The Queers, Thug Entrancer, Deceased, Ice Choir, Richard Davies & more)

Yuck @ Austin’s Red 7 last week (more by Tim Griffin)
YUCK

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Yuck, Alvvays, Painted Zeros @ Bowery Ballroom
Yuck survived losing singer Daniel Blumberg just fine — last year’s Glow and Behold was equal (maybe better) than their debut. Tonight’s show is with Toronto quartet Alvvays who are pretty appealing too.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Low Fat Getting High @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
It’s a good one tonight at Brooklyn Night Bazaar with veteran NYC powerhouses the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Plus Low Fat Getting High, plus gourmet eats, ping pong, mini golf, and shopping. Free.

Kanye West @ Prudential Center
As you may know if you read the internet, Kanye West’s debut album, The College Dropout, turned 10 this week, and to celebrate he included a lot of College Dropout material at the tour kickoff show in Pennsylvania. Presumably that trend will continue tonight at this NYC-area show. He’s still doing almost all of Yeezus too.

Supreme Cuts, Thug Entrancer, WC Kids @ Baby’s All Right
Chicago-based producer Thug Entrancer just released his new album, Death After Life, which — like a lot of artists on the Software label — is minimal, ambient stuff, though there are at least a couple tracks that fall into dance. This is the record release party.

Ice Choir, Germans, Future of What @ Cameo Gallery
Do you like the smoooooooth sounds of the mid-’80s New Pop scene like Scritti Politti, Prefab Sprout, and Spandau Ballet? Ice Choir replicate those sounds with uncanny precision. The whole night should appeal, for that matter. Pastel attire not required.

Dead Meadow, VietNam, Lushes @ Glasslands
Dead Meadow have been making ’60s-inspired psychedelic rock for over a decade now, which they keep up on their most recent album, 2013’s Warble Womb. Tonight’s their second of two NYC shows.

The Queers, Night Birds, Scandals, Valley Lodge @ Mercury Lounge (2 shows)
’90s-era punk survivors The Queers are doing two shows at Mercury Lounge tonight. First, they play Love Songs for the Retarded in full at the 7 PM show with great support coming from likeminded but newer bands Night Birds and The Scandals. Then they play their “pop hits” at the 11 PM show with comedian Dave Hill’s band Valley Lodge opening.

Deceased, Fantom Warrior, Penetration, Sacrificial Blood, Exhumation @ Saint Vitus
Deceased have been churning out excellent death/thrash since 1985, and they’ve been consistently active, still delivering killer live shows.

Bueno, Free Time (with Richard Davies), Baked, Zula @ Shea Stadium
It’s a record release party for horn-charged band Bueno, but fans of Aussie indie rock will want to arrive early to see former Cardinal/Moles singer Richard Davies pair up with Free Time.

Godmaker, Rozamov, Eggnogg, Crushed @ Acheron
Boston’s Rozamov are a pretty new band, but their thrash-tinted sludge, with its murky production aesthetic, is already promising. Catch them tonight and see how they deliver live.

Cheap Trick @ Wellmont Theatre
Cheap Trick have loads of power pop hits (“Surrender,” “I Want You to Want Me,” etc) dating back to the ’70s, and tonight they’re just outside of NYC to bring them to you at this Wellmont Theatre show.

Buckwheat Zydeco @ Iridium
One of the most famous zydeco musicians of all time and, at 66, still going strong.

Dave Bixby @ Issue Project Room
Psychedelic folk legend Dave Bixby’s only album, Ode to Quetzalcoatl, came out back in 1969, and though it was under-appreciated in its time, it’s gone on to gain the recognition it deserves as one of the better records of its kind from that era. Tonight he plays his first-ever New York show. Fans of psych-folk won’t want to miss this.
