What’s going on Thursday? (Stephen Malkmus, Real Estate, Rioux, Nick Waterhouse, Nada Surf, Les Claypool & more)

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks @ Lincoln Hall on 02/20/2014 (more by Jeff Ryan)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Endless Boogie @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Fresh off his strongest solo album in some time, Malkmus brings his arch wordplay and occasionally jammy indie rock to NYC for two sold-out shows, this being the second. Tonight starts his tour’s run with Endless Boogie.

Real Estate @ Subculture
Real Estate will be playing their new album Atlas in full at this show which is also being broadcast live on WNYC’s “Sound Check” (and online too).

Nick Waterhouse, The Jay Vons, Daddy Long Legs @ Bowery Ballroom
Classic soul devotee Nick Waterhouse will release his second album, Holly, next week. Get an early taste live tonight — tickets are still available.

Nada Surf @ The Bell House
Nada Surf have been making smart, heartfelt pop for over 20 years. It’s been a couple since they put out a new record — maybe we’ll get some new songs tonight.

Les Claypool’s Duo De Twang @ Secret Brooklyn Venue & McKittrick Hotel
Les Claypool and pal Bryan Kehoe rework Primus and Frog Brigade songs in a bluegrass/skiffle motif. They play two shows tonight: early at a soon-to-be-disclosed Brooklyn location (which BV is presenting), and then their second sold-out McKittrick show.

Pypy, Maicamia, The Dreebs, Cyanide Tooth @ Death by Audio
What do you get when you take the singers of two of Montreal’s most exciting, volatile underground bands (Annie-Claude of Duchess Says and Choyce of CPC Gangbangs) and put them together? Pypy, who make crazed punk rock. This is the band’s first NYC show and live shows can be very wild. Sounds like fun. Also on the bill: Maicamia which features Godspeed’s Mauro Pezzente.

Fletcher C. Johnson, Doug Tuttle, Backwords, Shy Hunters @ Baby’s All Right
Fletcher C. Johnson’s 2012 album, Salutations, just got repressed via Burger Records and tonight’s the release party for that. Also playing Doug Tuttle who used to be in Mmoss and just released his pleasantly trippy debut album on Trouble in Mind.

Grass is Green, Palehound, Celestial Shore, Bluffing, Howler @ Pianos
This is the second of two Palehound shows at Pianos, and with this stacked mostly-local bill, this is really the one to be at. There’s the stop-start post-hardcore of their labelmates Grass Is Green, the math pop of Celestial Shore, the lo-fi pop of Bluffing, and at 7 PM there’s a free set (so technically a different show, but free and right beforehand) from the once-buzzy Howler.

Rioux, Beat Culture, Headaches @ Glasslands
Local psychedelic dance producer Rioux is becoming a live staple, and here’s another chance to see him. He just released a new single, “Maze1,” which you can stream below.

Teen Suicide, Alex G., Special Explosion, Sorority Noise @ Suburbia
This is a good bill all around, with a reunion set from lo-fi popsters Teen Suicide (the old band of Sam Ray, now of Julia Brown), the bedroom songwriting of Alex G, the Death Cab-esque Special Explosion, and Sorority Noise.
