What’s going on Sunday? (Chain & the Gang, Japanther, Buffalo Daughter, Jungle, CYMBALS, Antibalas & more)

Chain and the Gang @ Secret Project Robot 2011 (more by Harriet Roberts)
Chain

Japanther @ MHOW 2011 (more by Andre St. Clair)
Japanther

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Chain and the Gang, Turn To Crime @ Union Pool
Ian Svenonious is a one-of-kind, having fronted legendary bands Nation of Ulysses and Make-Up and the very rock Chain and the Gang. The band’s new album, Minimum Rock n’ Roll, is out in April and you can stream a track from it below.

Japanther, Tiny Moving Parts, Tournament, Radical Discharge @ Saint Vitus
Japanther are always known to have a rowdy live show, and while Tiny Moving Parts may not be as nuts, they’re pretty fun and undeniable themselves. We’re happy to be presenting this co-bill from those bands, and there’s punky support from Tournament and Radical Discharge.

Drowners, Stuckey & Murray @ Brooklyn Bowl
NYC’s leather jacket-wearing rockers Drowners aren’t shy about their affinity for bands like The Stokes and the Arctic Monkeys. They play for the toddler set at the family-friendly Kidrockers series this afternoon.

CYMBALS, Seoul, Paperwhite, Marian Hill, Lion Babe @ Brooklyn Bowl
The free It’s A School Night series has a little SXSW flavor tonight with UK band CYMBALS and Montreal’s Seoul. RSVP for gratis entry.

Buffalo Daughter, The Suzan @ Baby’s All Right
Japanese trio Buffalo Daughter released records on Beastie Boys’ label Grand Royal in the ’90s and have continued since. Catch them tonight with another Japanese band, The Suzan.

Jungle, Wet @ The Mercury Lounge
Enigmatic UK act Jungle let their music do the talking: specifically, R&B-tinged dance pop that manages to sound both classic and modern at the same time. A duo in the studio, they expand to a seven-piece live, and this is their second of two sold-out NYC shows with Wet.

Throwing Muses, Tanya Donelly @ Bowery Ballroom
Indie rock vets Throwing Muses returned in 2013 with the album/book, Purgatory/Paradise, their first full length in 10 years. Tonight could be special: opening is Tanya Donnelly who was in the band during the ’80s (and is Kristen Hersh’s half-sister). Maybe she’ll come out with TM for a couple songs?

Shellshag w/ Todd Congelliere, Tuff Tits, Magnets, Dirty Circle, Lilith Velkor @ Death By Audio
Last night, Toys That Kill’s Todd Congelliere shared a bill with Tuff Tits (and Screaming Females) at Silent Barn to celebrate Shellhead’s (of Shellshag) birthday. Tonight, Todd actually joins Shellshag on stage, and the three of them will be performing songs from each other’s respective projects together.

Balk, Radical Dads, Mt Warning, Wool @ Glasslands Gallery
It’s a night of ’90s style indie rock with the flinty Balk, and seriously underrated trio Radical Dads

Antibalas @ SOB’s
NYC afrobeat crew promise “a bunch of new/different material tonight, dusting off some old gems and working in some new stuff.”

Comedy Night @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Big league comedy talent (Chris Rock, Louis CK, etc) show up regularly (and unannounced) for Hannibal’s very popular free comedy show at Knitting Factory’s front bar. Get there early.

Bob Dorough @ Joe’s Pub
You may not know his name but chances are you’ve heard Bob Dorough’s songs and voice: he wrote and sang many of Schoolhouse Rock’s best-loved songs, including “Three is Magic Number,” “Conjuction Junction,” and “The Shot Heard ‘Round The World.”

Vampillia, Leah Lazonick, Snowday, England in 1819, Three Thousand Rivers @ Pianos
Boredoms-related Vampillia play another of their zillion NYC shows at Pianos tonight.
