What's going on Saturday? (Fat White Family, Gary Numan, Death Vessel, Screaming Females, Thou, So So Glos & more)

Fat White Family at BV-SXSW 2014 (more by Tim Griffin)
FWF

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Fat White Family, New Casino , Flame Proof Moth @ Union Pool
Hide the children! The UK’s sleezy, depraved rock band have hit NYC after leaving their stink on Austin at SXSW. They really are a “must see live” band, and this is your second of three chances here to do so. (Please note: the singer got totally naked at Pianos last night [as instagrammed by Sean Lennon!].) Not sold out.

Cut Copy, Jessy Lanza, Turkish Prison @ Terminal 5
Australian synth popsters wrap up their sold-out two-night run at Terminal 5 tonight. If you’re going, don’t miss Hyperdub-signed downtempo pop singer Jessy Lanza, who was pretty impressive last week at SXSW.

Pizza Underground, Total Slacker, Toby Goodshank @ Baby’s All Right
Stretching their 15 minutes of fame like a molten chunk of moz, Pizza Underground return to Baby’s All Right.

Gary Numan, Big Black Delta, Roman Remains @ Webster Hall
Bands like Cold Cave and Trust may be making the more talked-about gothy synth pop of today, but those bands all owe more than a little to Gary Numan, who stays active and can be seen in NYC tonight.

Shearwater, Death Vessel, Jesca Hoop @ The Bell House
Austin folk rockers Shearwater and their Sub Pop labelmate Death Vessel, who also makes folk but a more delicate kind, team up for this show at The Bell House tonight.

Screaming Females, Thou @ ABC No Rio (matinee)
There will be all kinds of guitar heroics at ABC No Rio tonight coming from the highly skilled NJ punk trio Screaming Females and sludge metal bashers Thou.

So So Glos, Household, Arm Candy @ Judson Memorial Church
As part of the ‘Punk at 40’ events, these local bands team up for a benefit concert that has all proceeds going towards local DIY venue Silent Barn.

NO, Reuben and the Dark, The Darcys @ Mercury Lounge
All three of these bands are on the Canadian label Arts & Crafts, and their joint tour is in NYC for two shows, this being the first. We’re partial to The Darcys who have been known to cover whole albums by Steely Dan.

The Sound of Animals Fighting, Unwed Sailor @ Best Buy Theater
Post-hardcore experimentalists The Sound of Animals Fighting (aka multiple RX Bandits members and Anthony Green) have only played live once in 2006, and have never played the east coast. Tonight NYC will get their first chance to see them, and if this is your kinda thing it’s an opportunity you shouldn’t miss in case it’s another 8 years before they perform again.

The xx @ Park Avenue Armory
The xx continue their run of 25 shows at the Park Avenue Armory which run through March 29. Each show is extremely intimate (holds 40 people) and very sold out.

The Allman Brothers Band @ Beacon Theatre
Pioneers of jam bands, and progenitors of blues and southern rock, The Allman Brothers continue their multi-night run at Beacon Theatre tonight.

Elysian Fields, Melvin Van Peebles Menage A Trois, The Aspiring Me @ Rough Trade
Having emerged from the ’90s Knitting Factory scene, Elysian Fields tonight celebrate the release of their new album, For House Cats And Sea Fans. Some, though, may want to go tonight to see legendary filmmaker and musician Melvin Van Peebles. Others may want to just check out Rough Trade’s venue which finally reopened this weekend.

Saralee, Shtknf, Downtown Boyz, Filthy Savage @ Death by Audio
Boston’s Saralee make shambolic indiepop that recalls the early ’90s days of Tiger Trap or Bratmobile. You can stream last year’s self-titled album below.

John Wesley Harding’s Cabinet of Wonders, Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), Nada Surf, Eugene Mirman & more @ City Winery
It’s another of John Wesley Harding’s variety shows, and as usual, he’s got an excellent and eclectic list of guests in music, comedy and more joining him.

Doron Sadja, Tristan Shepherd, Lea Bertucci, Diamond Terrifier @ Trans Pecos
Tonight’s the record release party for ambient/noise artist Doron Sadja’s album/book, Breath Heart Skin; kicking off the evening is Diamond Terrifier, the a solo sax/electronic project from Z’s Sam Hillmer.

Forget Cassettes, New Myths, Mother, Ponychaser, Captain Hollow @ Pianos
Brooklyn trio New Myths make spectral synth-rock and are currently finishing up work on their new album. Also: we are neither condoning or condemning, but just want to inform you that Mother is fronted by Penn Badgley (aka Dan from Gossip Girl).

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
