What's going on Friday? (Pains of BPAH, Trail of Dead, Walter Martin, Jamie xx, Whores, La Femme, SETH & more)

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart at BV-SXSW 2014 (more by Tim Griffin)
Pains

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart @ Rough Trade NYC
No disrespect to the TPOBPAH line-up that made the band’s first two albums, but the all new version of band Kip Berman has put together — including Drew Citron of Beverly, Jen Goma of ASDIG, and Dream Diary’s Jacob Danish Sloan — are seriously talented. And the Pains were never this much fun before. New record’s really good, too.

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, La Femme, Midnight Masses @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band, Trail of Dead are touring their classic 2002 album Source Codes and Tags. If you’re going tonight, get there in time to see French band La Femme (a weird double bill, admittedly).

Walter Martin (of The Walkmen), Wesley Stace, Sam Lipyste @ Housing Works
Of the many Walkmen offshoots following the band’s hiatus, Walter Martin is the only member currently making a children’s album. He’ll talk about it — and play some songs — at this event titled “Rock and Roll: An Infantile Business” that also features Wesley Stace and author Sam Lipsyte

Jamie xx, John Talabot @ Verboten
In the midst of The xx’s ongoing residency at Park Avenue Armory, producer Jamie xx takes a break tonight for a show at Williamsburg’s newly-opened dance club Verboten. Joining him is Barcelona’s John Talabot, making for a very solid double bill.

Whores, Fight Amp, No Way, Creepoid @ Saint Vitus
This is a pretty diversely stacked bill with heavy noise rockers Whores, sludge metalliers Fight Amp, slowcore devotees Creepoid, and more.

Psalm Zero, Pyrrhon, Stern, Penchant @ Trans Pecos
Psalm Zero (featuring members of Castevet, Extra Life, etc) makes a killer blend of experimental metal and industrial, and tonight they’ll be joined by technical death metallers Pyrrhon (whose Doug Moore is a BV contributor), making for a very solid double bill.

Choke Up, Lee Corey Oswald, Wicca Phase, The Laurels @ Suburbia
Portland, OR’s Lee Corey Oswald make kind of folky punk but aren’t exactly “folk punk.” Tonight they bring their tour with the relatively likeminded Choke Up to Brooklyn DIY spot Suburbia.

Outer Space, Radio People, Antenes @ Baby’s All Right
When John Elliott isn’t playing in Emeralds, he’s making equally weird music with his Outer Space project, and you can catch him performing said weird music at Baby’s All Right tonight.

San Fermin, Ensemble LPR @ BRIC House
San Fermin is led by Ellis Ludwig-Leone (who’s worked with Nico Muhly on arrangements for Sufjan, The National and others), and he’s currently joined by Allen Tate and Rae Cassidy on lead vocals at live shows to create layered chamber pop that should appeal to fans of the work he and Muhly have done for those other artists.

Tigerdare, Free Time, Icewater, Chase King @ Shea Stadium
Tigerdare celebrates the release of their new EP, Wires Over, Wires In, tonight with some quality openers: Aussie expats Free Time and Icewater (who are also Eleanor Friedberger’s backing band).

SETH, Rioux, Spirit Guide, Headaches, Kashaka @ Silent Barn
SETH is the collaborative project between UNO associates James K and Gobby, who make some pretty interesting stuff together. Tonight they’ll headline this ‘Connect’ party which, among others, features ‘Connect’ regular Rioux, whose psychedelic dance music is a welcome regular in NYC clubs lately.

Justin Vivian Bond @ Joe’s Pub
A regular in NYC’s drag scene for years, and once a member of the duo Kiki and Herb (with Kenny Mellman, who is now in The Julie Ruin), Justin Vivian Bond kicks off his new show, The Drift, at Joe’s Pub tonight. The show “creates a new, free associative, collage of spoken word and song inspired by the story of Karen Stone, a retired actress who drifts from one space to another -either in her mind, in couture or in bed.” He does it again tomorrow, and on 4/10 & 4/11.

Lindsay Lowend, Shift K3y, Cameron Kush @ Slake
Tonight’s late show at Slake (10 PM) will be a dancey one with Lindsay Lowend (who’s part of Lollapalooza’s newly-announced lineup), UK producer Shift K3Y, and more.

DJ Sticky Dojah, STRNGRS, Hunters & Runners, Owel, Tomboy, Agita
A few local-ish bands on this bill, including NJ’s Owel who mix pretty, slightly technical emo with atmospheric alt-rock.

Lady Gaga @ Roseland Ballroom
The long-lived NYC venue Roseland Ballroom will be closing its doors in early April, but before then it will go out with seven Lady Gaga shows, this being the first.

The xx @ Park Avenue Armory
The xx continue their run of 25 shows at the Park Avenue Armory which run through March 29. Each show is extremely intimate (holds 40 people) and very sold out.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
