You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights from what is a very strong night…

Bo Ningen, Yvette @ Studio at Webster Hall
How to describe London-via-Japan band Bo Ningen in five words? “What the hell was that!” (That’s a positive.) This doom/shoegaze/prog/psych/punk quartet feature insane playing, jumps from the drumkit, and flying hair that at times seems to be a special effect. Just go see them, it’ll all make sense. Maybe. Local duo Yvette, who open the show, are great too.

Atomic Bomb – The Music of William Onyeabor @ BAM Howard Gilman Opera House
David Byrne, Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor, Dev of Blood Orange, Money Mark, Sinkane, Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem) pay tribute to Nigerian synth-funk great William Onyeabor over two nights, this being the first. Part of the Red Bull Music Academy, this has potential to be very, very cool.

Chrome Sparks, Infinity Shred @ Baby’s All Right
Chillwave survivor Chrome Sparks (aka Ann Arbor, MA Jeremy Malvin) returned with a new EP, Goddess, out this week. You can stream a track below. Tonight’s the record release show with support from 8-bit warriors Infinity Shred (formerly Starscream).

CHVRCHES, The Range @ Terminal 5
Who’d have thought a year ago that Scottish synthpop band CHVRCHES would get so big? Tonight’s their first of three sold-out shows at Terminal 5.

Connan Mockasin, Kirin J Callinan @ Music Hall Of Williamsburg
Two eccentric performers from the other side of the globe are teaming up for what should be an interesting tour. Things could get weird…and fun.

Frances Cone @ Rough Trade
While within the singer-songwriter mise-en-scène, Cone’s got a distinctive voice and way with melody, and her recordings have an smart, understated charm. She plays tonight supporting her just-released self-titled EP.

Rodrigo y Gabriela, Zach Heckendorf @ Beacon Theatre
Mexican acoustic guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela have a new album, 9 Dead Alive, and are currently on tour in support of it. Tonight’s the second of three nights at Beacon Theatre.

Stardeath and White Dwarfs @ Mercury Lounge
They’re from Oklahoma, they’re wildly psychedelic and their singer’s last name is Coyne. But it’s not the Flaming Lips (though they’re related). If you like the Lips, they’re worth checking out.

Megafaun, Grandma Sparrow @ Baby’s All Right
Nick Sanborn has been getting more attention for his electronic act Sylvan Esso lately, but his other group, psych-folk combo Megafaun, are still at it. The band’s drummer, Joe Westerlund, is opening the show as Grandma Sparrow. They are promising special guests, which could end up being very special indeed.

AJ Davila, Plastic Pinks, EX-Humans, Gunfight @ Cake Shop
While best known for fronting Puerto Rico’s party-friendly garage rockers Dávila 666, front AJ has a new solo album that goes in glammier directions. This show — which has a stacked garage punk lineup — should be a wild one.

New Young Pony Club

New Young Pony Club, DWNTWN @ Glasslands
It’s been a while since NYPC’s “Ice Cream” made waves, but the band are back with a new album that doesn’t futz with the punk-funk formula too much, and this is their first NYC show in ages. Sold out.

Clark, Octo Octa, ITAL @ Glasslands
UK producer Clark brings his new Phosphor live show to NYC with support from 100% Silk-signed deep house producer Octo Octa and locals Ital. Expect this party to go laaaaate.

BANG, THe Golden Grass, Occultation @ Saint Vitus Bar
’70s-era Philadelphian hard rockers BANG didn’t last very long in their initial run but their three albums have achieved cult status. Back together 40 years later, tonight will be their first-ever show in NYC.

Little Barrie @ Knitting Factory
Groovy, psych-leaning UK trio Little Barrie worked with producer Edwyn Collins on their new album, Shadow, which is has a nice crunchy, retro vibe. They’re fun live.

Now People, Sonic Avenues, Steve Adamyk Band, Shellshag @ Shea Stadium
This is a record release show for Atlanta punks Now People’s new album, Love, Sex, Death & the Weather, but also features two Canadian bands — Montreal’s Sonic Avenue and Ottowa’s Steve Adamyk Band — both of whom fall in the nasally-pop-punk-powerpop mode.

Suzanne Vega, Air Hest @ The Bell House
A singer-songwriter for over 30 years (best known for “Tom’s Diner”), Vega just released her new album, Tales From the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles where she samples 50 Cent on one track, believe it or not.

Ray Lamontagne @ Town Hall
With this just released album, Supernova, Ray adds a welcome dose of psychedelia to his folk formula. He’ll be playing the album in full tonight which is his second of two shows at Town Hall.

Vinnie Paz w/ Army of the Pharaohs @ Irving Plaza
It’s been four years since Vinnie Paz released Season Of The Assassin and he’s finally back with Army of Pharaohs’ new one, In Death Reborn, which as usual is steeped in late-’80s/early-’90s vibes.

Gina Harlow & The Cutthroats @ Hank’s Saloon
Gina Harlow & The Cutthroats may not have gotten as popular as some of their other ’70s NYC punk pals, but their material lives up as well as many of them. Catch them in their hometown tonight.

Nuclear Santa Claust, Pampers, Wet Blood, FLYKYLZ @ Lulu’s
It’s a great double bill of local punk tonight from the Ramones-y Nuclear Santa Claust and the arty Pampers.

Hysterics, Exit Order, New Crime, Sorrows @ 538 Johnson
Olympia punks Hysterics are in town for their first of two NYC shows this weekend at 538 Johnson tonight. Their sound recalls classic hardcore (think early Black Flag) but sounds totally in the now. Exit Order’s highly emotive and intense punk is worth catching too.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
