What’s going on Thursday? (Kurt Vile, Doldrums / Moon King, Modern Baseball, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Disclosure DJ, more)
Doldrums at Bowery Ballroom in May (more by Amanda Hatfield)
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Kurt Vile and The Violators, Steve Gunn @ Brooklyn Bowl
Kurt Vile’s take on folk rock recalls the classics but at this point he’s got a sound of his own. Tonight’s a great chance to catch him somewhere far more intimate than the very large Governors Ball he plays this weekend.
Doldrums, Moon King, Eola, Empress Of (DJ Set) @ Baby’s All Right
It’s all in the family at this show with Doldrums (aka Airick Woodhead), and Moon King (the band with Woodhead’s brother, Daniel). Both members of Moon King also play in the current Doldrums line-up and, believe it or not, this is the first-ever show where both bands have been on the same bill.
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard @ Baby’s All Right
Stick around after Doldrums for seven-strong Aussie outfit King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, who make psych-rock not unlike Black Angels or the BJM. This is the first of their June “Brooklyn Summer Fun Residency.”
Modern Baseball, Tiny Moving Parts, The Hotelier, Sorority Noise @ Webster Hall Marlin Room
It’s a stacked night for emo with the lyrical folk/pop/punk of Modern Baseball, mathy post-hardcore trio Tiny Moving Parts, the dead-serious, socially aware emo/pop punks The Hotelier, and the scrappy power pop-leaning Sorority Noise.
Neil Degrasse Tyson, Eugene Mirman @ Beacon Theatre
Neil deGrasse Tyson and Eugene Mirman have been doing a live version of space-oriented radio show “Star Talk” for some time, though Tyson is a lot better known these days, thanks to the reboot of science series Cosmos. Tonight’s edition features special guests Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., His Holiness The Gyalwang Drukpa and more.
Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, Syd Arthur @ Bowery Ballroom
Sean Lennon’s band The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger make pop that is, well, Beatlesque. Tonight’s show also features a band with another relative of rock royalty, Syd Arthur, the psychedelic UK quartet whose violinist is Kate Bush’s nephew.
Curtis Harvey, Eamon Hamilton, Lost Tapes @ Cake Shop
Curtis Harvey was previously in ’90s-era slowcore vets Rex, folk rock supergroup Pullman, and now he makes gentle folk on his own. Opening tonight’s show is BrakesBrakesBrakes singer Eamon Hamilton, as well as Spain’s Lost Tapes who are still in town after their NYC Popfest appearance last weekend.
Hector’s Pets, Music Band, A Rex & J Rex, Organs @ Death by Audio
NYC garage rockers Hector’s Pets recently released their new album Pet-O-Feelia and will probably play a lot of that tonight at this show that also features A. Rex and J. Rex, and Organs.
Questlove (DJ set), Curtis Harding (DJ set), AlunaGeorge (DJ set) @ Gansevoort Park Avenue Pool Bar
This is a Governors Ball pre-party on the swanky Gansevoort Park rooftop which is free if you RSVPEed to RSVP@nightswimnyc.com.
Peanut Butter Wolf, Sinkane (DJ Set), Chits @ Glasslands
Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf gets the dancefloor moving at Glasslands tonight.
Disclosure (DJ Set), Kaytranada, Jubilee @ Output
Disclosure have become quite the festival band, as anyone going to Governors Ball this weekend can see, but their late-night DJ sets are always a hit too, and before GovBall you can experience that at Williamsburg dance club Output tonight.
Pro Era @ Red Hook Park (FREE)
Pro Era may have young members (one of which is Joey Bada$$) but they rap like it’s still the decade they were born in (the ’90s). Tonight’s show is a Summerstage show and it’s totally free.
Molly & The Zombies, Dave Hause, Jared Hart @ The Bell House
It’s no secret that Gaslight Anthem frontman Brian Fallon is as (or maybe more) into folk as the punk and heartland rock of his main band. His new band Molly & the Zombies (also feat. members of Scissor Sisters, Plow United, Ryan Adams/Grace Potter’s bands) gives him a chance to fully commit to that type of music. Tonight’s their first NYC show, and it’s with Loved Ones frontman Dave Hause and Scandals frontman Jared Hart.
Herzog, Black Brick, Shark Week, Grave Pool @ Bowery Electric
Cleveland indie rockers Herzog are back with a genuinely terrific new album, Boys, that recalls the heyday (and hooks) of ’90s college radio with great lyrics to boot.
Life Size Maps, Grand Resort, Hard Nips, Beiju @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Underrated locals Life Size Maps headline this all-around quality show that also features indiepoppers Grand Resort and the in-your-face Hard Nips.
Dysrhythmia, Many Arms, Mick Barr/Marc Edwards @ Saint Vitus
It’s gonna get weird and heavy at Vitus tonight with out-there metal band Dysrhythmia, punk-jazz combo Many Arms, and a duo set from Krallice’s Mick Barr and veteran jazz drummer Marc Edwards.
