What's going on Friday? (Ceremony, Calvin Love, OOIOO, Bill Nye, Matthew Dear, Omar S, Matthew Sweet & more)

Ceremony at Warsaw in 2012 (more by Joe McCabe)
Ceremony

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Plaid @ LPR
In UK electronic duo Plaid’s 20+ year career, they’ve collaborated with/remixed Bjork, Goldfrapp, Unkle, Portishead, and many more. Tonight the Warp-signed duo return to LPR.

Wilsen, Icewater, Jennah Bell, Kennan O’Meara @ Baby’s All Right
It’s a busy night at Baby’s, with three separate shows. The first features two bands specializing in etheral pop: Wilsen and Icewater.

Yonatan Gat, Mandingo Ambassadors @ Baby’s All Right
Then at 10 PM it’s Show #2 with Monotonix’s Yonatan Gat…

Celeste, Starchild @ Baby’s All Right
…and then late night (midnight doors) it’s Starchild who has toured as a singer with Blood Orange and Solange.

Ceremony, Nothing, Iron Lung, Bad Side @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
There’s a killer (and free!) show at Brooklyn Night Bazaar tonight with the wild PV-turned-garage-punks Ceremony, heavy shoegazers Nothing, powerviolence duo Iron Lung, and Philly hardcore band Bad Side.

Matthew Sweet, Tommy Keene @ City Winery
It’s a double-dose of jangly power-pop and keen songwriting chops. Matthew Sweet, with his ’90s hit “Girlfriend,” is the better known of the two, but in certain circles Tommy Keene is held in very high regard.

The Sheiks, Iyez, The Chickenhawks, Speedo @ Death by Audio
Memphis garage rockers The Sheiks recently recorded a new 7″ with Jack Oblivian, and their singer also plays in Ex Cult.

Bill Nye (The Science Guy) @ Irving Plaza
A PBS kids TV superstar in the ’90s, Bill has seen a resurgence lately (we could use more science in the world) and will be doing three sold-out nights at Irving Plaza, this is the first.

Omar S, Luke Hess, OG Ignitt, Turtle Bugg @ Output
While much of the deep house world continues to move closer to pop, Omar S heads in the other direction, making more stylistically underground material, still of course with masterful production.

Speculator, Cool World, Advaeta, Jerry Paper, Sunflower Bean @ Palisades
Low fi LA band Speculator headline tonight’s Palisades lineup; get there early to catchy the warmly psychedelic pop of Sunflower Bean.

CYMBALS, Ume, Midnight High, The Cosmonauts, Sideways Revolt, David Baron @ Pianos
UK band CYMBALS make dancerock not too far off from Hot Chip and they were good when we caught them back in March. Tonight’s show is with Austin power trio Ume. One note: the Cosmonauts on this show are NOT the California psych band signed to Burger.

Frankie Cosmos, Infinity Shred, Chumped, Chappo, Field Mouse, Dead Stars, Shark?, Marvin Berry and The New Sound, Gunfight, Michael Jordyn and Greg, The Teen Age, Happy Lives, ONWE, Big Neck Police, Huge Pupils, Retail, Scherzo, Cal Fish @ Radio Bushwick (Gigawatts Festival)
The four-day Gigawatts Festival started yesterday but kicks into high gear tonight with a huge line-up of bands. We like Field Mouse, Dead Stars, Frankie Cosmos, The Teen Age and Shark? in particular.

OOIOO, Lichens, Ryan Sawyer @ Rough Trade
Led by Yoshimi of Boredoms, OOIOO have been around since the ’90s, making highly-rhythmic, experimental music with each new album rarely sounding like its predecessor. The band released Gamel last year in Japan (their first since 2009) which is based around the ancient instrument, the gamelan, and is said to be the most representative of the band’s live sound.

I Am The Avalanche, Somos, Rust Belt Lights @ Saint Vitus
I Am The Avalanche headline this sold out show, and if you dig them, we recommend getting there early for Somos too. Their punk/indie mix should fit the bill well.

Calvin Love, Las Rosas @ South Street Seaport
The Seaport Music Festival today brings Edmonton’s synthy/twangy Calvin Love for an early evening show. If you’ve never caught Brooklyn’s garagey Las Rosas, here’s a good chance to do so (they’re worth seeing). FREE, music starts at 7 PM.

Flume, Sweater Beats, Goldlink @ Terminal 5
Australian producer Flume saw a HUGE bump in his career recently, partially thanks to a Lorde remix. Tonight’s his third of three sold out Terminal 5 shows this week, and it’s worth showing up on time for rapper Godlink.

Gogol Bordello, Man Man @ The Space at Westbury
The always-wild gypsy punks Gogol Bordello don’t hit NYC on their current tour, but they’ll be nearby for three area shows, this being the first. The eccentric Man Man will be a good fit too.

Matthew Dear, Trus’me, Ryan Elliot, Will Calcutt, Jakub Alexander @ Verboten
Matthew Dear is a maker of both heady electronic music and poppier stuff too. Given the lineup and location, we have a feeling he’ll be focusing on the former tonight.

Netherlands, D’nt, Max Low & the Electric Lights, Flesh @ Grand Victory
Timo Ellis fronts this excellent synth-fueled heavy punk band. Embrace your squelchy side at their show tonight.

Mortals, Godmaker, Mammal @ The Acheron
Sludgy chuggers Mortals recently dropped their sophomore LP on their new label home of Relapse and it’s a good one. They celebrate the record in their hometown tonight.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
