What's going on Thursday? (Holy Ghost!, Frankie Cosmos, Pretty & Nice, Twin Peaks, Woodsman, Moon Boots, more)

Holy Ghost! in Williamsburg Park in 2013 (more by PSquared)
Holy Ghost

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Frankie Cosmos @ MoMA
Frankie Cosmos combines the twee pop of Beat Happening with the anti-folk of Moldy Peaches for a blend that works very well. She’s a regular in NYC DIY venues, but this evening’s show in MoMA’s gorgeous courtyard should be a special one.

Holy Ghost!, Kim Ann Foxman, Dave P @ House of Vans
It’s the last free Vans House Party of the summer tonight, and the parties will go out in style with the addictive dance pop of Holy Ghost!.

Pretty and Nice, Jacksie, Adult Dude, Denizen @ Glasslands
Pretty and Nice are unfortunately going on indefinite hiatus this year after being a band for nine years, but before that they’ve got a new EP out this week which continues their knack for catchy pop. And they’ve got some fairwell shows including tonight’s so see them while you can. Local indie rockers Adult Dude are worth catching tonight too.

Twin Peaks, The Lemons @ Baby’s All Right
Chicago’s Twin Peaks make fun, summery garage rock not unlike their pals in The Orwells. Tonight’s their second of two NYC shows on their tour with The Lemons, whose catchy lo-fi pop is worth showing up for.

LODRO, Waltz, Electroputas, Ora Iso @ Death By Audio
Having put the wraps on their debut album (due sometime soon TBA) and a tour with DIIV, smoldering and bluesy LODRO should be well rehearsed and maybe armed with some new tunes. Waltz, meanwhile, have their amps set on Despair with some serious Birthday Party style melodrama.

Woodsman, Cloudland Canyon, Psychic Reality, Seabat, Velvet Zombie @ Palisades
The recently-opened Bushwick venue Palisades has very quickly become a hot spot for small shows, and tonight they’ll host the first show in their new “Palisades Presents” series. The show will feature a few different types of ambient music from the guitar/loop pedal of Velvet Zombie, to the synthy Seabat, more synths (and vocals) from Psychic Reality, and finally a special collaborative set from Woodsman and Cloudland Canyon. Should be a cool night. Woodsman recently put out a new single that you can hear below.

New Myths, Skymatic, Two Seconds to Midnight, Little Anchor, Tutlie @ Pianos
Brooklyn synthpop trio New Myths will release their debut album this fall. Before that happens, they’re doing an August residency at Pianos, and this is your second of four chances to see them.

Weeknight, Boot Blacks, Youth Worship @ Rough Trade
If you dig the moodier side of The Raveonettes, you’ll probably be into spending an evening with Weeknight’s desolate highway synth-n-twang sound. They’re matched with two bands who probably also wear a lot of black.

Jamie Kilstein, Chris Gethard, Matty Blake @ Union Hall
Tonight at Union Hall it’s a live recording of the ‘Tell the Bartender’ show with stories from guests Jamie Kilstein (Citizen Radio, ‘Conan’) and the always-entertaining Chris Gethard, plus an appearance from Matty Blake (’30 Rock,’ ‘Orange is the New Black’).

Moon Boots, Stadenco @ Verboten
’90s pop-house is all the rage right now, thanks in part to a particular UK duo, but plenty of others are doing the sound extremely well too. Like Moon Boots.

Sete Star Sept, The Brood, Skullshitter @ Acheron
Sete Star Sept are an unhinged noisecore duo from Japan, laying waste with just drums and bass.

Dee Dee (from Dum Dum Girls) @ Housing Works Bookstore Cafe
Pitchfork celebrates Issue 3 of their print edition The Pitchfork Review tonight, featuring readings from some of the writers and a solo set from Dum Dum Girls’ singer, Dee Dee.
