What's going on Saturday? (Afro Punk Fest, Arcade Fire, Frog Eyes, PS I Love You, Kevin Saunderson, John Talabot & more)

Shabazz Palaces @ Williamsburg Park 2012 (more by David Andrako)
Shababaz

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

AfroPunk Fest @ Commodore Barry Park
The free annual two-day AfroPunk Festival kicks off today with a ton of great artists in various genres, including soul/funk greats Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Ice-T’s metal band Body Count, wild punks Trash Talk, legendary hardcore band Bad Brains (with guest singers instead of HR), avant-rappers Shabazz Palaces, long-running Philly DJ King Britt, and more.

King Britt, Damon Bennett, Anthony Tidd and Special Surprise Guests, DJ Monk-One @ Littlefield
After AfroPunk, head to Littlefield where there’s an afterparty titled “Beautiful Noise: A Tribute to Sun Ra” with King Britt, and special guests are promised. With AfroPunk’s stacked lineup, there’s plenty of great artists those guests could be.

Arcade Fire, The Unicorns, Dan Deacon @ Barclays Center
Arcade Fire’s massive Reflektor tour is on its second of three huge arena shows at Barclays Center. What New York-centric songs will they cover tonight? What bobblehead celebrities will make an appearance? These shows are also doubly special because they’re three of the VERY few reunion dates for fellow Canadian indie faves the Unicorns. And Sunday night will be triply special with NYC punk legends Television.

Hooray For Earth, Porches, Grooms @ Bowery Ballroom
Local widescreen pop band Hooray for Earth released their new album, Racy, last month via Dovecote. Tonight’s record release show has a strong indie rock undercard too.

Donald Cumming, Rush Midnight, Born Cages, The Teen Age @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar offers weekends of local artisan shopping, gourmet eats, beer and wine, ping pong, black light minigolf and music all under one Greenpoint roof. Tonight’s headliner is former Virgins frontman Donald Cumming.

X (playing Under The Big Black Sun) @ City Winery
While hearing devout punk rock albums Los Angeles and Wild Gift at a sit-down joint like City Winery is a bit odd, the wider scope of X’s third album should be a better fit tonight. In addition to Under the Big Black Sun, John, Exene and the band will also play songs from the catalogue. Sold out.

Ski Lodge, Jack and Eliza, Rumors @ Glasslands
If you’re going to see jangly Brooklnites Ski Lodge tonight get there in time to catch the winsome folk pop of Jack and Eliza.

Guided By Voices, Boogarins @ Stone Pony
The ever-prolific Guided by Voices will play surely another marathon set tonight, boozy and riff-filled. Brazil’s Boogarins are worth showing up early to catch.

PAT @ Union Pool
JD Samson of Le Tigre/Men fame brings her PAT party to Union Pool this afternoon for their weeklly free Summer Thunder series, featuring DJ sets from ustin Strauss, The Cary Nation, Amber Valentine and Tyler Jensen.

Small Black, Kevin Morby @ The Lot in Long Island City
The Lot in Long Island City is a free, all ages music & film series and today’s afternoon entertainment features raspy singer-songwriter and all-around talent Kevin Morby and

Museum of Love, Sinkane (DJ set), Nancy Whang (DJ set), Holy Ghost! (DJ set), Juan Maclean (DJ set) @ The Wick
DFA records is throwing a dance party tonight, the highlight of which is the live debut of onetime LCD drummer Pat Mahoney’s new group, Museum of Love. The “special guest” promised earlier is a DJ set from Juan Maclean.

Kevin Saunderson, Eclair Fifi, DJ Earl, Shamir (live), The Range (live), Gifted and Blessed (live) @ MoMA PS1
Warm Up continues with more great artists this weekend. Detroit techno legend Kevin Saunderson headlines this one, and there’s other good stuff on there too, though we have a feeling a lot of people may be showing up to catch the live set from fast-rising singer Shamir.

Cyril Hahn, Ezrakh, Mess Kid @ Output (roof, afternoon)
Warm Up has some competition today because Output also hosts an afternoon outdoor electronic show on their roof. PMR-signed Cyril Hahn who’s remixed his labelmate Jessie Ware more than once and has collaborated with Shy Girls, headlines.

John Talabot, JDH & Dave P @ Output
Stick around Output for the night show (or maybe head there after Warm Up) for the great Barcelona producer John Talabot and FIXED regulars JDH & Dave P.

Liturgy, Wreck and Reference, White Suns @ Pioneer Works
Back in 2011, Liturgy put out a much-loved and much-maligned album that they themselves tagged as “transcendental black metal.” Unfortunately, they soon lost their rhythm section but now the band is back in their 4-piece formation and this is their first NYC show since reforming. There’s excellent support coming from two dark and genuinely weird bands, Wreck & Reference and White Suns.

Frog Eyes, PS I Love You, Miniboone @ Rough Trade
Arcade Fire/Unicorns isn’t the only place to go for quality Canadian indie rock tonight. Sad news struck Frog Eyes singer Carey Mercer last year, but he appears to be doing well because his band is back on the road. Ontario tourmates PS I Love you, meanwhile, are back with a new album, For Those Who Stay, which is a big, ambitious indie rock record (and maybe their best yet).

Earthless, The Shrine, Mirror Queen @ Saint Vitus
Earthless are trusty providers riffs on riffs on riffs, and The Shrine may not offer the same kind of 14-minute epics, but they’ve got some shredders too.

The Strypes, The Skins @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Irish sensations The Strypes have been playing together for five years but are still in their teens — and sound like mod ’60s soul. Given that description you might not be surprised to learn Paul Weller, Roger Daltrey, Jeff Beck and Noel Gallagher are all fans.
