City Gardens

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

City Gardens ‘Riot On the Dance Floor’ documentary @ Loews Village East
Riot on the Dance Floor, the long-in-the-works documentary on storied NJ punk/metal club City Gardens, is finally coming out this year, and it makes its NYC premiere tonight, proudly presented by BrooklynVegan. In addition to the screening, there will be a Q&A with director Steve Tozzi, City Gardens booker-and-subject-of-the-documentary Randy Now, Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers), Sim Cain (Rollins Band), John Joseph (Cro-Mags) and Howie Abrams (co-founder of In-Effect Records).

‘Riot On the Dance Floor’ afterparty w/ Gibby Haynes (DJ Set) @ Bowery Electric
After the screening, head to Bowery Electric for the free afterparty which Buthole Surfer Gibby Haynes is DJing. It’s free and open to anyone 21 or over, whether you came to the movie or not. Stop by!

Heaven’s Jail, Prospector, The Loom @ Baby’s All Right
Tonight’s the record release show for the new Heaven’s Jail album, Ace Called Zero. Says producer Phosphorescent of main man Francesco Ferorelli, “He has the ability to casually sneak complex imagery and metaphor into a deceptively simple package. It’s just great songwriting. Simple as that.”

Reigning Sound, Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens, The Above @ Bowery Ballroom
Reigning Sound signed to Merge for this year’s Shattered LP, which is more quality garage rock from the long-running band. This show’s doubly exciting since Daptone-signed soul traditionalist Naomi Shelton opens.

Nancy, Atlantic Thrills, Ravi Shavi, Larry and the Babes @ Death By Audio
Ravi Shavi and Atlantic Thrills are both from Rhode Island and make Nuggets-style psych. They’re on the bill with greasy Brooklyn rockers Nancy.

Widowspeak @ MoMA
It’s the last of the MoMA Nights series which takes place in the museum’s lovely Sculpture Garden where indie fans and ladies who lunch intermingle to the sounds of Widowspeak.

New Myths, The Suzan, Midnight Hollow, Basic Shapes, The Britnays @ Pianos
Brooklyn synthpop trio New Myths will release their debut album this fall and tonight’s the last of their August residency shows.

THUMPERS, Sun Club, Little Racer @ Rough Trade
If big, synthy festival indie pop like CHVRCHES is your kinda thing, you may dig recent Sub Pop signees Thumpers too.

Peter Stampfel, Maharadja Sweets, Lazurite @ Trans-Pecos
Peter Stampfel is a veteran of folk, having been in the Holy Modal Rounders, and he stays very active today too. He’s been a frequent Jeffrey Lewis collaborator as of late, and this year he put out a solo album on Don Giovanni.

Vic Ruggiero, Kepi Ghoulie, Todd Fausnacht @ Grand Victory
It’s a good night for solo sets from ska/punk veterans with Vic Ruggiero (The Slackers) and Kepi Ghoulie (Groovie Ghoulies). The Snails’ Todd Fausnacht opens.

Museum of Love, Cosmic Kids, JKriv (DJ sets) @ Verboten
Musuem of Love, the new band from LCD drummer Pat Mahoney (he sings!), just made their NYC live debut last weekend. Tonight’s just a DJ set, but it is free.
