You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Alt-J, Mikky Ekko @ Beacon Theater
Alt-J followed up their debut with a new album this year, and besides red herring single “Left Hand Free” it’s actually a weirder and less hooky album than their first. The band is headlining MSG next year so it may come as no surprise that tonight’s much smaller show is sold out.

Fiasco, Sediment Club, Michael Jordan, Le Rug @ Death by Audio
Tonight’s the seventh to last show ever at Death by Audio, and it’s got a couple bands that used to be regulars around the Williamsburg scene — Fiasco and Le Rug — as well as no wavers Sediment Club and a band who shares their name with a famous basketball player.

The Dream Syndicate, Sunflower Bean @ Rough Trade
One of the leaders in LA’s early-’80s “Paisley Underground” scene, The Dream Syndicate looked to The Velvet Underground and other ’60s bands while most were playing with synthesizers. Broken up since the late ’80s, Wynn reformed the band in 2012 with ’80s-era members Dennis Duck and Mark Walton, plus Miracle 3 guitarist Jason Victor and they’ve been playing sporadically ever since. This is their second NYC show in 25 years (first was last night).

Blacklisted, Brain Slug, Razorheads @ Acheron (3 PM)
Formed out of the 2000s melodic hardcore scene, Philly’s Blacklisted quickly pushed things further and ended up with material that retained the fury of their roots but was also truly experimental. They’re planning to release their first album since 2009 next year, and we’ll likely hear some of that at today’s afternoon show.

Forward, Warcry, Long Knife, Ajax @ Acheron
With that Blacklisted matinee and tonight’s Forward show, it’s a good day for hardcore fans to just spend the whole day at Acheron. These Japanese punks have been at it for years and any chance to catch them while they’re in the US is one worth taking. Their tourmates Long Knife are no slouches either, and the Tragedy-related Warcry and local rippers Ajax are worth catching as well. Strong bill. Forward and Long Knife do it again at Vitus tomorrow.

Decapitated, Misery Index, Pyrrhon @ Saint Vitus
Polish death metal vets Decapitated recently opened for GWAR in the NYC-area and now they’re back for a smaller headlining show. Good DM bill all around too with Baltimore’s grindy Misery Index and Brooklyn’s genre-defying Pyrrhon.

Atmosphere, Prof, Dem Atlas, DJ Fundo @ Terminal 5
Alt-rap duo Atmosphere have been at it since the ’90s and put out their seventh album, Southsiders, earlier this year. Slug and Ant are still in great form (as witnessed at their FFF set last weekend) and tonight’s big T5 show should be a blast.

BELLS≥, The Pauses, Jumpers, Thurn & Taxis @ Grand Victory
Headlining this show is the Jawbox-related BELLS≥, who are of course always a good band to catch, but making this show extra interesting is it’s the first full-band NYC show from Orlando’s shapeshifting indie pop trio The Pauses (whose 2011 debut was produced by Jawbox frontman J. Robbins).
