What's going on Monday? (New Pornographers, Priests, Ryan Adams, Pookie & the Poodlez, Forward, more

New Pornographers @ The Brill Building this summer (more by Chris La Putt)

Priests @ DbA in April (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Priests

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The New Pornographers, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart @ Hammerstein Ballroom
Coming off what might be the best album they’ve ever made, Brill Bruisers, Carl, Dan, Neko and the rest of the gang have been playing long, hit-filled sets on most of this tour which is opened by likeminded pop scholars TPOBPAH.

Future Punx, Priests, Downtown Boys, Pink Wash, B-Boys @ Death by Audio
Only six shows at DBA left, and this is the last one currently with a fully confirmed line-up. No surprise: it’s a pretty killer bill headlined by Brooklyn new wavers Future Punx and DC’s fiery Priests, plus two other Sister Polygon-turned-Don Giovanni bands, Downtown Boys and Pinkwash (mems Bleeding Rainbow, Hume), as well as B Boys.

Lucinda Williams @ Beacon Theater
Acclaimed roots singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams releases her new double album, Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone, earlier this year, which is also her first self-released album. That creative freedome lit a spark which has been apparent in her live performances too.

Forward, Long Knife, Green Beret, Night Birds @ Saint Vitus
It’s night 2 of 2 for Forward in NYC tonight. These Japanese punks have been at it for years and any chance to catch them while they’re in the US is one worth taking. Their tourmates Long Knife are no slouches either, and you also shouldn’t miss Green Beret (mems Social Cirkle) and the surf/skate punks Night Birds.

YG, Nipsey Hussle @ Best Buy Theater
Compton rapper YG put out his well-received proper debut album, My Krazy Life, earlier this year, and he’ll be heading back on tour in support of it soon. Most of the tour is co-headlining with A$AP Ferg, but tonight’s NYC show is with Nipsey Hussle.

Guantanamo Baywatch, Pookie & The Poodlez, Skull Practitioners @ Cake Shop
Guantanamo Baywatch just played DbA with Ty Segall and have stuck around for what should be a pretty wild show with Bay Area nasally punks Pookie & the Poodlez. You can check out an EP from the latter below (fans of Hunx and Burger Records take notice).

Ryan Adams, Butch Walker @ Carnegie Hall
Ryan Adams has been a busy guy this year with a new solo album, collaborating on stage with Bob Mould, covering Foreigner and Bryan Adams, and whatever else it is he’s up to. He’s also on tour now and is in the midst of a five-show run in NYC. Tonight is his second of two solo acoustic gigs at Carnegie Hall.

Night Train with Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield
Brooks Wheelan, Joe Zimmerman, Mike Drucker, Koretta Gray, and Christian Polanco are the guests this week at Wyatt Cenac’s comedy get-together.

Deep Space: Thomas Dolby (DJ), Francois K (DJ) @ Cielo
He’s already blinded you with science, tonight Thomas Dolby blinds you with his DJ skills at his first-ever Manhattan set spinning with Paradise Garage vet Francois K.

East India Youth, The Mast @ Mercury Lounge
East India Youth’s album Total Strife Forever didn’t end up winning this year’s Mercury Prize but it’s an interesting mix of ambient composer styles and James Blake-ish neo-soul.

We originally listed Hess is More at Nublu tonight, his run doesn’t actually start till Thursday (there was a listings error, apologies).

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
