Run DMC

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Run-DMC, LL Cool J, DJ Z-Trip, Lecrae, K. Michelle, Diggy Simmons @ Barclays Center
While original Run DMC members Darryl McDaniels and Joseph Simmons reunited back in 2012 for their first shows since the passing of Jam Master Jay, tonight’s Xmas show at Barclays Center will be their first public show in the legendary hip hop group’s hometown since coming back.

RatKing, Show Me The Body, Young Gutted, ’86 @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Run the Jewels may have ran the world of alt-rap this year, but their recent tourmates Ratking’s debut album, So It Goes, was another of 2014’s finest moments in that genre. Catch them in their hometown tonight for free.

DonChristian, Tigga Calore, Joey LaBeija, False Witness, LE1F (DJ Set) @ Cameo Gallery
If you’re into Le1f, there’s a chance you’re already familiar with this pal, rapper/singer DonChristian, and an even better chance that you’d like his style. He plays Le1f’s Kwanzaa show later this month, but tonight he headlines his own NYC show, and Le1f’s DJing it.

TK Wonder, Kissey, Evvy, DJ Anthony Bones @ Glasslands
Getting her start in the spoken word scene, Baltimore native TK Wonder blends hip hop, electronic and R&B styles. Also on the bill is Kissey who collaborates with TK under the name Wonderkiss.

Mates of State, Dreamshow @ Mercury Lounge (2 shows)
Indie pop duo Mates of State have two shows at Mercury Lounge tonight (the early show is sold out), and they’re promising to debut a bunch of new songs.

RL Grime, Lunice, Branchez @ Terminal 5
Trap producer RL Grime put out his debut LP this year, and quickly got a lot more famous — tonight’s his biggest NYC show yet by far, and it’s sold out.

RL Grime, Abjo, Andre Power @ Output
After T5, keep the party going at Output.

Cannabis Corpse, Mammoth Grinder, Inanimate Existence, Mother Brain @ Saint Vitus
Punny stoners Cannabis Corpse and Texas thrashers Mammoth Grinder bring their killer double-billed tour through NYC tonight. Show up early for local two-man band Mother Brain.

Heaven’s Gate, The Gradients, Washer, DONE, Half Human @ Silent Barn
It’s been more than a year since post-shoegazers Heaven’s Gate released their excellent debut album. A new EP is supposedly on the way soon, and perhaps we’ll get a taste of that tonight.

Ira Glass, Monica Bill Barnes & Anna Bass, Buster Poindexter, Regina Carter, Pedrito Martinez, Sofia Rei, Bria Skonberg, The Xylopholks, Molly Ryan, Kat Edmonson @ Town Hall
It’s the second annual Gotham Holiday Swing variety show featuring everyone from This American Life host Ira Glass (once again performing with Monica Bill Barnes & Anna Bass), David Johansen in Buster Poindexer guise, Kat Edmonson and more, all backed by Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks Orchestra.

Matthew Dear, Paco Osuna, Aril Brikha, Michael Gracioppo @ Verboten
Hard to pigeonhole, electronic musician Matthew Dear is a mad scientist making dance music hybrids from a number of disparate beakers. While his live shows can be elaborate spectacles, he’s in DJ mode tonight alongside Spanish spinner Paco Osuna.

Slava, Draveng, Head Hurtz, Physical Therapy @ Baby’s All Right
Doors are at midnight for this late night dance party with Berlin’s Draveng and a local faves.

Shilpa Ray, Wild Bore, Young Runner, Stuydeyed @ Cake Shop
Brooklyn punk blueser Shilpa Ray’s latest release is 2013’s It’s All Self Fellatio EP, but she recently announced that she’ll follow it with a new album on Northern Spy. Maybe we’ll hear some of that tonight.

Zula, eskimeaux, Rivergazer, Trace Mountains, Jordan Martin @ Shea Stadium
A lot of cool names from the local scene are on this bill, including prog poppers Zula, Eskimeaux (the project of Epoch Collective member and Frankie Cosmos band member Gabby Smith), the Porches-related Rivergazer, and Trace Mountains (Dave from LVL UP).

Orden Mundial, Crazy Spirit, Puce Mary, Survival @ Palisades
Danish noise artist Puce Mary’s last show in NYC was with Pharmakon earlier this month, and if you like her you’ll probably like Puce Mary too. The rest of the bill is on the punk side, with Spain’s Orden Mundial, NYC’s ripping Crazy Spirit, and local regulars Survival.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
