You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Fleetwood Mac @ Madison Square Garden
Fleetwood Mac are now back with their entire classic lineup — Christine McVie, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham — and tonight they begin their multi-night NYC-area run, this being the only show in NYC proper. They’ve still got it and they play all the hits, so see them while you still can. They’re saying they may stop touring after this year.
Sufjan Stevens, Yarn/Wire @ BAM
While Sufjan will release his first studio album since 2010 this March, ahead of that he’s premiering a new piece called Round-Up at BAM which continues tonight and runs through Sunday (1/25). Sufjan will be on electronics and new-music ensemble Yarn/Wire is on piano and percussion.
Just Blaze’s House Party w/ Joey Bada$$, Statik Selektah, & more
Joey Bada$$ put out his official debut album, B4.DA.$$, this week, and it saw him staying true to his ’90s influences but pushing his sound forward too. Tonight’s his third NYC show of the week, part of Just Blaze’s weekly party at Webster Hall.
Amen Dunes, Kevin Morby, Nude Beach @ Bowery Ballroom
Amen Dunes’ psych rock sounded better than ever on last year’s Love, and this week he revisited and updated four of its songs on a new EP. Tonight’s show is an all-around great lineup with former Woods member/Babies co-frontman Kevin Morby and power poppers Nude Beach.
Dawn Richard @ Marlin Room at Webster Hall
Dawn Richard’s new album Blackheart takes “alternative R&B” and pushes it into all kinds of different directions, with exceptional production. Tonight you can see how these wild sounds translate live.
Lydia Lunch, Handsome Dick Manitoba, Miss Guy, Sherry Vine, Matt Hitt, DJ Jonathan Toubin @ Bowery Electric
Another of the many shows Jonathan Toubin is DJing in NYC this month, and this one’s got a great lineup: no wave legend Lydia Lunch, punk pioneer Handsome Dick Manitoba (of The Dictators), NYC club fixture Miss Guy, drag queen Sherry Vine, and Drowners singer Matt Hitt.
Alejandro Escovedo @ City Winery
Punk rocker turned roots rocker Alejandro Escovedo will celebrate his 64th birthday with his annual residency at NYC’s City Winery. For this year’s residency, he’ll be playing his first three solo albums full across three nights, starting tonight with 1992’s Gravity.
Father, Junglepussy, Glass Gang @ Baby’s All Right
Get a double dose of futuristic rap from Father and Junglepussy, plus an opening set from Brooklyn electropoppers Glass Gang.
Kid Millions, Mick Barr, Sarah Bernstein, Stuart Popejoy, GDFX, Ava Mendoza, Brat Pit @ Silent Barn
They’re calling this night the “Ice Melter,” featuring a bevy of hot experimental-leaning musicians, including a collaboration between Oneida’s Kid Millions, Mick Barr, Sarah Berstein and Stuart Popejoy, a solo set from Liturgy/Guardian Alien’s Greg Fox (GDFX), and more.
Honduras, The Teen Age, The Yin Tangs, Sunset Guns, Best Behavior @ Coco 66
Yes, Coco 66 still exists and has shows, even if it’s been out of the spotlight for a while. Tonight’s a nice lineup of local bands headlined by the very talented Honduras.
Gingerlys, Mumblr, Palehound, Fern Mayo @ Shea Stadium
Somewhere between indiepop and shoegaze like the catchy sounds of Gingerys who are currently working on the first album. Catch ’em in action tonight with also-great locals Palehound and more.
John Hodgman’s Secret Society @ Bell House
John Hodgman’s society (of comedy concerns) isn’t so much a secret anymore, having outgrown its old home of Union Hall and may soon do the same for its new one — tonight’s sold out.
