H2O, Kill Your Idols @ Saint Vitus (noon)
In celebration of NYHC/pop punk vets H2O’s 20th anniversary, they just played three nights at Saint Vitus with two albums of their six-album discography played in full a night. Now to cap off the run, they’ve got two all-ages matinees at the venue this weekend, this being the first. It’s a great double bill with fellow NY punk vets Kill Your Idols opening.
The Julie Ruin, Bleached, Youth Code (DJ set) @ House of Vans
Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre still makes biting, urgent material with her band The Julie Ruin, who play a free show in NYC tonight (though you had to RSVP, which is now closed). Get there early for garage pop band Bleached.
Pissed Jeans, VEXX @ Baby’s All Right (2 shows)
Noisy post-hardcore rippers Pissed Jeans always put on a wild show, and tonight they’ll put on two — 8 PM and midnight. Olympia punks Vexx are on both shows and worth seeing too. Opening the early show is Big Ups and opening the late show is Honeysuck.
Superheaven @ Rough Trade
Superheaven’s new album Ours Is Chrome dropped this week, and if you’re looking for a new band with alt-rock bangers like “Cherub Rock” and “Everlong,” look no further. This is a free, all ages afternoon release show (1:30 doors, 2 PM show), ahead of their tour which begins in NYC this Friday.
Nate Wooley (Seven Story Mountain V), Maya Dunietz, Fritz Welch, TILT Brass @ Abrons Art Center
The final night of the ISSUE Project Room-presented Tectonics Festival features Nate Wooley presenting Seven Story Mountin V which has been “expanded in scale and complexity for a 19-piece ensemble.”
Har Mar Superstar, Mereki, Lost Lander, Holiday Mountain @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar offers up a wide variety of evening entertainment, including ping pong, mini-golf, arcade games, shopping, micro-brews and local wines, and of course free live music. Tonight is headlined by entertaining party-starter Har Mar Superstar.
Juan Wauters, Nude Beach, Tall Juan, Vox Disco @ Shea Stadium
You get two Juans for the price of one tonight: Wauters is celebrating the release of his terrific new album, Who Me?; Tall Juan makes a similar raw garage-folk ruckus. In between the Juans are excellent heartland punks Nude Beach.
Endless Boogie, Hoagie Jungle, The Renderers @ Union Pool
One of the most accurately named bands in NYC, Endless Boogie grab hold of a groove and don’t let go. It’s not 100% accurate as they do usually stop at some point but don’t try and argue that to get your money back. Also on the bill: New Zealand’s long-running The Renderers who will play Cake Shop later in the evening.
Zuli, The Renderers, Hamish Kilgour, Flying Squirrels, Amber Arcades @ Cake Shop
One of Cake Shop’s “super shows” celebrating their 10th Anniversary, this show features The Renderers and fellow kiwi Hamish Kilgour (of The Clean, etc), and German artist Amber Arcades whose live band features members of Real Estate and Quilt. There may also be surprise guests, who can say?
DJ Playero, DJ Laz, Erick Rincon, Happy Colors, Pablitomix, Notch, Uproot Andy, Geko Jones @ Verboten
Part of the Red Bull Music Academy, tonight Verboten is being taken over by Que Bajo Records and they’ll be spinning cumbia, reggaeton, that will spin salsa, bachata, dancehall, baile funk, merengue, mambo, kuduro, kwaito, funana, tribal guarachero and more.
The Minus 5, Steve Wynn and The Miracle Three @ WFMU Monty Hall
When not playing in Young Fresh Fellow, and The Baseball Project, Scott McCaughey shows a slightly more serious side with The Minus Five which also (usually) features REM’s Peter Buck. Also on the bill is Steve Wynn, which means most of The Baseball Project are playing this show. Who knows what may happen?
Saun & Starr @ Ginnys
Some of you may recognize Saundra Williams and Starr Duncan Lowe from their days singing backup for Sharon Jones. Saun & Starr have now made their own album, titled Look Closer, which is out May 19 via Daptone (of course). The pair celebrate the new LP at this Harlem spot, playing an early and late show tonight.
Antwon, Wiki, Show Me The Body @ Elvis Guesthouse
Two alt-rappers play this show, Antwon and Ratking’s Wiki, and opening is the more rock-oriented Show Me The Body.
Creeping Dose, Mommy, Born Wrong, Pleasure Industry, Dilate @ The Acheron
A handful of solid local hardcore bands are on this bill, and especially worth catching is the angry, uncompromising Ontario band Born Wrong while they’re in town.
Luke Roberts, Chris Brokaw, Toby Driver, Andrew Hock, Cetacea @ Trans-Pecos
This is a cool show all around with solo sets from Luke Roberts of black metal band Thantifaxath (not to be confused with the folk singer), Chris Brokaw of Codeine and Come, Toby Driver of Kayo Dot and several other bands, Andrew Hock of Psalm Zero, and Cetacea aka Bryan Bray of Canadian metal band Gates (not to be confused with the NJ post-hardcore band).
Rough Francis, D’NT, Gozer @ Grand Victory
Rough Francis features the three sons of Bobby Hackney (of proto-punk legends Death). Some of them have also played in their fathers’ band, and their sound isn’t too far removed.
Marky Ramone w/ Andrew WK @ The Stone Pony
Marky Ramone (Ramones drummer from 1978-1983 and 1987-1996) is currently on the road playing his old band’s songs with Andrew WK singing. Tour hits NJ tonight.
